Phantom Menace

If you watched Morning Joe today (minus Shweaty Joe), you probably noticed the overall vibe in the 8AM hour was to describe healthcare reform as being in jeopardy. No reasons given. No polls or preliminary whip counts. Nothing.

Cenk Uygur noticed the same dynamic happening in both the Washington Post and on the Politico:

…the president’s healthcare reform package is thrown into doubt in both articles. Will he be able to pass it? Is he floundering? Is this reform effort in trouble?

When you read the articles, however, you don’t get any reason why these assumptions are made or these questions asked. There are no poll numbers to indicate that the American people want healthcare reform any less – or that they are more skeptical about Obama’s version.

And…

But mainly they almost seem to rejoice in pointing out that he is having trouble getting some of his fellow Democrats on board. That is true. And that gets us to point number two. Throughout both articles, they credulously point to conservative Democrats concerns about how quickly this is all proceeding or how much the plan will cost.

Did it not occur to these reporters that some of these so-called conservative or centrist Democrats might be against this reform effort because their primary financial benefactors are the same healthcare companies that are desperate to kill this bill?

No. It didn’t.

To be fair, Shuster and Schultz have done some great work on MSNBC exposing the corrupt and spineless. But it’s all buried among this general vibe that healthcare is in trouble — you know, for some reason no one in the corporate media can quite pinpoint.

I’ve read that supposedly polling is showing that support is falling, and while I don’t necessarily believe that, it’s obviously what Joe is basing his “disturbance in the Force” vibe you’re talking about. He can’t cite a poll saying support is falling if he never admitted that there was a poll showing support at 76%. Instead, he has to just vaguely repeat the propaganda and let his authority on the matter be felt because, hey, he knows people and the people that tell him enhanced interrogation works and has worked to save American lives are telling him that support for the president is falling blah blah blah fucking lie fucking lie blah blah blah.

Bill Kristol is of course onto this theme as well. He is apparently advising Republicans to not back down, to be vigilant while Obamacare is on the ropes. I’m sure you saw the article. I read it this morning and thought, “Where is this coming from? I’ve seen no drop in support from anyone.”And with regard to the issue about who is willing to pay for public health, I am. I will likely lose my job if it gets passed b/c the company I work for makes software to help communities serve the uninsured. If the price I pay is that I lose my job and have to find something else, so be it. If the price is that I pay a little more in taxes (though I’m nowhere near the 350K mark), so be it. It is better that I adjust to a new system than let millions perish under the existing one. I’m not the only one who feels this way, not by a long shot.

But isn’t the press in the tank for Obama? Aren’t they his butt boy? I don’t see how anyone thinks this. Just look at the way they report on him.But let’s face it, Obama is a winner. People like to take down a winner. So any time that Obama seems to be losing, it’s really big news. ‘Cause he’s so perfect and all.

It’s very clear that the liberal, in the tank for Obama MSM are eager to frame this as Obama’s first political loss as opposed to covering the actual story of healthcare in America.

David Gregory’s downfall is of a piece with this new Big Media meme that health care is “failing.” Even on NPR tonight, the pessimism is palpable — with zero relevant facts in the coverage.Beltway Village has given its Big Media whores a serious credibility problem, but their coverage is still affecting public opinion.

Just heard the “failing” meme on the hourly national news update on a sports talk station (don’t know which service they use). After saying Obama had admitted defeat on health care, the details revealed that nothing has changed, Obama still wants the bills passed by August, some Dems and Repubs are saying its too soon etc. But the overall assessment, that heath care reform this year is dead was the overall message for those listening only to the headlines.

Just heard the 4 o clock news update (Pacific Time) and the national news service mentioned above is CBS.
