Doof Quote of the Day

“If you like the Post Office and the Department of Motor Vehicles and you think they’re run well, just wait till you see Medicare, Medicaid and health care done by the government.” —Arthur Laffer on CNN

Medicare and Medicaid aren’t run by the government? Holy shit! Either everyone except Laffer is misinformed, or Laffer is, you know, full of shitola.

By the way, the Post Office is amazing. As Maher said recently, anyone can drop a letter into a blue metal box on the sidewalk and in a couple of days it arrives at the place listed on the envelope. For 44 cents. Off the top of your head, can you name anything that costs 44 cents and actually functions exactly as advertised?

Most of us know someone who works for the government and the majority of them are hard working, decent individuals. Why aren’t more people insulted by these constant attacks?

I can’t think of anything other than a letter that someone will come to MY HOUSE and pick it up and deliver it across the continent to someone else’s house for 44 cents.

Perhaps Laffer is just cranky because no one is teaching his curve in economics classes anymore.

Exactly, cynicalgirl. Why do they hate Americans so much? Or at the very least, doubt our ability to tackle an issue. They’ve spent years trying to cast the government as some vague, nebulous, dangerous “Other”. Military and law enforcement are excluded from that group, however, as they fetishize anything that carries even a whiff of masculinity and intense patriotism. If a Democrat had said “Look how the military and FBI are run. Can’t even protect us from terror or subjugate a 12th century sandbox in under eight years. Do you want the people that run the military to run health care?”, the Right Wing Noise Machine would have lost it’s collective shit for the next month. When they attack Americans doing the best they can to run the government the conservatives try so hard to destroy, that’s enlightening, that’s informative, that’s patriotic. And I have a sneaky suspicion that his license renewal from the DMV he disparages will get lost by the mailman he so cavalierly attacks.

I ship things 4 or 5 times a week and have for 3 years. In those 3 years the PO has lost 3 boxes.3.And two of those were actually lost overseas somewhere in customs. My parents are very happy with Medicare. The DMV here is efficient and the folks who work there are very polite.Laffer seems to forget that the DMV are run by your state and county, not the federal gov’t. Medicade is also run by your state with the service and efficiency being great to horrible also depending on your state and county.I really have no problem with people who are on the other sides of issues. I just really would like them to begin from some basis of reality and truth.

I’ve always been amazed at how little it costs to get a letter or envelope across country in only a day or two!! The post office is one industrial-sized bargain!! Anyone who doesn’t see that doesn’t have a CLUE, IMO!These hate-mongers with no functioning brain cells save “mob mentality” are making me physically ill.Don’t even know how to comment re: them anymore.Default: Effin’ TOOLS!!!

Well, folks, I AM a government employee–state of PA, and working despite not having been paid for over a month (how’s that for dedication?)–and I AM insulted by these brainless attacks on government and its workers. Yes, we DO work hard, and by the way, we too are taxpayers, just like everyone else. And yes, there are lazy people and careless drudges in public employment, just like everywhere else. So what? Take a look at Wall Street and WalMart if you want to see how well the private sector works—for a few sharks at the top. For taking care of the common good, we MUST have government programs. The vaunted self-interest that we think works so well in the so-called free market is pure poison for the common good, as Bush’s ruthless 8-year attempt to privatize all public works has unfortunately proven.

I agree, the U.S. postal system is a great deal, and it’s six days a week. Also, the NV DMV is not bad at all. Most transactions are done via the web site. Smog checks/insurance payments are wired back to the DMV records, so I don’t have to mail or hand in anything.Laffer’s curve was the basis for Reaganomics, and was proven wrong years ago. The theory that lowering taxes on the rich increases economic growth falls apart at the margins. But what do you expect from a USC professor.
