Sunday Night Thread in America

How’s about an open thread?

I’m back from an excellent weekend in Virginia. As usual, I forgot to bring something important (a book, The Unhealthy Truth, which I intended to lend to my brother), and I left something behind (a small bag of dirty laundry). I’m a doof.

What Hillary missed on her Third-World Safari Mission: Electronic Voting Machines! They are negligible and unconstitutionally administered and operated and leave too much to chance. I think Hillary has been a real team player and is performing admirably. Marvelously.Joe Biden: Why isn’t he out there talking to the American people face to face more often than just the other day..? It’s like they’ve stashed him away for counseling and re-education. And if so, I don’t want a funny coctail party Joe Biden in that office. I want a somber and solemn, but straight-talking Joe, speaking with clear cut facts and NO personal op-ed narratives that end in winks, until I know that the deathly stench the former Vice President left behind is gone forever. I want to see the still-burned-into-his-nose-permanent-who-farted? face.Tom Delay: Yeah, he may be a corrupt Jack Abramhoff side-kick, champion of sweatshops, indentured servitude, and sextourism, as well as a whip-cracking enemy of democracy as former House Majority Leader, but he sure can dance! The election in Afghanistan: Does it feel…. C.I.A.-ish…? It kinda doesn’t, but oh well.Cash For Clunkers: R.I.P? I hope so. I know it’s given a much needed economic spark to the plugs, but it almost kind of feels like the government just spent $4,000 a piece on some tire pressure gauges.Karl Rove: You’re busted, dude. Deal with it you worm. Plaxico Burress ain’t got nothin’ on you.Tom Ridge under the Bush administration: Terrorists by any other name? Absolutely.Blackwater(Xe): Is anyone going to look into Jeremy Scahill’s claims of top level CIA agents working for a private army allegedly involved with international death squads?Mexican Drug War: Awesome! Life imitating art, art imitating life? Chicken….egg…? Mexican officials have announced Friday that they’ve decriminalized small amounts of marijuana, cocaine and heroin. Cancuuuuuuuun!!!!! Bro!!!!!!Zaz!!!!!!!Kidding.Michael Moore: Capitalism: A Love Story, his latest documentary is creating a buzz. He said he made this movie like it was his last. There’s a line in the movie Walk The Line where the guy playing Sam Phillips says, “If you was hit by a truck and you was lying out there in that gutter dying, and you had time to sing *one* song. One song that people would remember before you’re dirt. One song that would let God know how you felt about your time here on Earth. One song that would sum you up….” That’s the kind of movie Michael Moore seems to be driving at. Kind of a high bar.Freaky Sunday Night Conspiracy Theory: North Korea is a controlled global mind control experiment in human behavior. The whole country is being observed by the world’s top…men… to study the effects of government imposed mass-psychosis.Had to get all that off my chest. Now I must throw a dayroom water fountain through the caged window and attempt my escape…

  • GItheJOE

    KABOOM!!!PTT?!?!?!?! Thank you Mr. Cesca.

  • MrBrink

Well, I liked the way you liked what you liked, veralynn.I hope I’m not over-stepping any open thread boundaries, or hogging too much space in here.Just spit-balling.

  • DP23

MrBrink, that was a wonderful stream of consciousness. Totally appropriate for the PTT. Hell, most anything goes anyway.

  • kansasdem

Twas past time for an open thread! You’re no doof Bob. A doof is a guy that falls of his own porch and breaks his leg!Yeah, I did that. Calling it just a “broken leg” is actually an understatement. I broke it at the knee – split (and splintered) both the femur and tibia right at the joint! Two doctors wanted to amputate and finally a third said he thought he could save it, but it may take three surgeries over the next two years.I still have my leg, it’ll be a while before I can walk and I have at least one more surgery to look forward to, but I still have my leg!Damn I’m glad I have the “public option”! You know – the one they call Medicare!

  • http://homepage.mac.com/wildlifeweb/bird/flamingo/honolulu/flamingo01.jpg veralynn

Wow kansasdem! That is something I would do. I hope you can stay off of it. I know how hard it can be. Sending good, positive thoughts your way.MrBrink–here at Bob’s, like DP says, pretty much anything goes. It is always nice to have a PTT and to have newbies. Especially a person who rants like you do. :)

  • DP23

Ewww, Kansas. That’s horrible. Glad I wasn’t eating–I always am when the NCIS or Bones autopsy is on. I hope you heal as painlessly as possible and that they can save it.

  • DP23

What Veralynn said. An open thread is a precious commodity these days. And you do good rants.

  • DP23

Joe! How’s the other life these days?

  • http://homepage.mac.com/wildlifeweb/bird/flamingo/honolulu/flamingo01.jpg veralynn

Joe must be enjoying that marital bliss I have heard about….

  • kansasdem

Oh, my leg is saved! I won’t lose it now. I may walk poorly, but it’ll be on my own leg.Had I not been covered by Medicare, I doubt that would be true. I believe the first two doctors were more interested in what my supplement plan would pay!The third was a teaching doctor:http://www.wichitaclinic.com/dr_bios/bios_display.php/bruce_r_buhrEspecially take note of this part:Fellowship: (Pelvic and Orthopedic Trauma Surgery) Centre Medico-Chirurgical de la Porte de Choisy – Paris, FranceFor fuck sake he practiced medicine in France!Ain’t France one of those damn socialist countries?

  • http://homepage.mac.com/wildlifeweb/bird/flamingo/honolulu/flamingo01.jpg veralynn

There is another reason for single payer in my opinion. I am glad you are going to be able to keep your leg!Damn socialism.

  • kansasdem

Agreed Nano, it’s time for us all to rear our fat ugly heads! And bring back the daily open threads. I could even wish for the GD to be added back to this here awesome blog! But on to better things, could this be true?BAUCUS ASSURES MONTANA CONSTITUENTS:”I WANT A PUBLIC OPTION TOO”http://thepoliticalcarnival.blogspot.com/2009/08/max-baucus-i-want-public-option.htmlPlease, please, please ………… just show me some more Democrats with balls besides Nancy Pelosi!PS: I’m somehow sure that Speaker Pelosi wouldn’t mind that comment.

  • http://www.osborneink.com Matt Osborne

Mr. Brink, North Korea is an experiment to answer the question: what would happen if you gave Tom Green a country?

  • http://www.osborneink.com Matt Osborne

kansasdem, we’ve got multiple reports:http://seminal.firedoglake.com/diary/7485The CW about the public option and health care reform is about to look very, very foolish.

  • kansasdem

“good luck with that NanoPosted by: veralynn [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 23, 2009 10:25 PM”Did I miss something? I mean I was in the hospital for 10 days, then partial care.Where did they all go?Tell me there was no irreconcilable dispute!

  • kansasdem

“The CW about the public option and health care reform is about to look very, very foolish.”Matt,I’m having a dumbass attack. What’s CW mean?

  • http://homepage.mac.com/wildlifeweb/bird/flamingo/honolulu/flamingo01.jpg veralynn

No kansasJoe recently got married and Bob stopped the PTT’s for a long time.

  • http://www.osborneink.com Matt Osborne

I’m in touch with Kyle. He’s working his ass off at the moment.

  • http://homepage.mac.com/wildlifeweb/bird/flamingo/honolulu/flamingo01.jpg veralynn

Glad to hear, thanks for the Kyle update. We were worried about him. Tell him we miss him. :)

  • http://nanotyrnns.blogspot.com/ Nanotyrannus

I was worried about Kyle because he disappeared from Facebook altogether, but it’s good to hear about his ass. I’ve always imagined it worked pretty hard. For Baucus to say that sounds awfully tepid. I wonder if he’s trying to give a little pushback on the negative publicity he’s getting. If he were really interested in the public option, we’d have had his bill by now.

  • http://homepage.mac.com/wildlifeweb/bird/flamingo/honolulu/flamingo01.jpg veralynn

Do you think maybe the spineless, bought and paid for blue dogs are rethinking their opposition to the consistent public approval ratings? Maybe this has been masterfully played by the admin, but damn, the shit we had to hear from the right?maybe spines can grow in the Congress, hope springs eternal and all

  • http://peggystone263@msn.com peggygeorge

I made a small purchase at Borders today and had a mutual rant with the middle-aged woman behind th counter. She said she has a bill for $30,000 for recent health care costs – and she HAS insurance. She said her last bill was around $170,000 (again – with insurance) and she declared bankruptcy after that one, but she can’t declare bankruptcy again…. The current system is so insane they might as well start shooting us at the hospital instead of releasing us to die by inches of crippling poverty.

  • kansasdem

Nano,I hope that Baucus and all the rest begin paying attention to those who elected them and not just the loud obnoxious Rethugs that wouldn’t vote for any Democrat even if they were sugar coated! The only Democrat I’ve seen come across strong on the MSM is Barney Frank. I’m sure there have been others but that’s the only one I’ve seen!As far as I’m concerned it’s time for every Democrat in the Senate, and the House, and Obama himself to say, “We’re done playing nice guy”! “Now it’s time to start kicking ass and taking names, and we’re going to stop taking names very, very soon”!Everyone involved can decide if they want a seat at the big kids table or not! Those who don’t can just sit and whine!

  • kansasdem

“hope springs eternal and all”Here also!

  • kansasdem

peggygeorge,That’s just it! Even if we put aside the morality of the issue, health care costs are bankrupting individuals and the whole damn country! We know single payer never had a place at the table, but if the second best option is also taken off the table we might as well lose altogether! The message from here forward should be: no public option = no deal!

  • http://nanotyrnns.blogspot.com/ Nanotyrannus

But I don’t see Baucus fearing Democratic voters. The voters in his state don’t fund his campaign like the industry does, and he’s probably in a safe seat anyway. To me that explains his shenanigans so far. He’s in a position of tremendous power and safety so he can play the game any way he wants. And if this thing fails, he’ll just appear on show after show talking about how hard he worked, how much he really wanted things to turn out well, blah blah blah.I think the only way to effectively neuter him is the option talked about the other day from KOS. It sounds like they’ll skip conference altogether and just bring the House bill up for a vote. Still, he’s a crafty sonofabitch. He didn’t get that chairmanship by playing nice with everyone. I’m sure he’s behind the scenes trying to make sure such a thing never happens.

  • GItheJOE

Sorry, I was lurking.I am packing for my move to South Korea. It is a Top Secret Mission to bring back intelligence(not information but actual in depth thought) to the United States of America.Yes, I got married right this time. I will call the first one a mulligan. If the PTT continues, except my presence on the daily. Moreover, I had to give the politics a break because I am now working with the Sarah Palin followers of this world. Don’t worry, I am not going to hurt myself or any small children.Fuck My Life!!! I quit smoking(Marlboro Reds of Heavenly Delight) for over a week now. Why? I like to punish myself.

  • http://homepage.mac.com/wildlifeweb/bird/flamingo/honolulu/flamingo01.jpg veralynn

COngrats on the no smoking Joe!It is time to go to Asia huh? I was hoping it would be a little later. On the plus side, it seems the danger from the north has abated for a while. You just try to help the Palinator’s&trade followers to keep an open mind and think for themselves, rationally. I have faith in you, you are good at showing people the errors of their way.You will let us know before leaving for good, right?

  • MrBrink

I was in a small breakfast diner in northwest Illinois two weeks ago on a Saturday morning and walked in on a lively political discussion taking place between six elderly white-haired men who were obviously regulars and was kind of pleasantly surprised to hear one arguing with another and he said: “Hey, I’ll pay a little more in taxes if it means healthcare for everyone.” The guy across the table wanted to talk about the president’s birth certificate and his muslim heritage. My Republican neighbor(wanted Romney “with that great head of hair”), who’s 67, told me the other day: “Yeah, your boy Obama came through. My monthly COBRA insurance payment was cut in half from $800 to around $400.” His son has Crohn’s disease and he’s still paying his way through college on a minimal pension and Social Security. Several doctors who, for 4 months and several separate opinions, didn’t know what was wrong with his son.I didn’t know much about that and only said in reply, “see…?” and nodded affirmatively. I had no idea why that was Obama’s doing, but I guess it must be O-BA-MA POWER!!!! I only know that $800 a month for insurance seems like an awful lot on his fixed income. My Other Republican neighbor, a small business owner twice my age, and Vietnam war veteran, who restores antique cars and hot rods, as well as a small real estate investor, stopped by the other day to ask me what I thought about “all this healthcare business.”I love the seasoned and loose way he talks. Before I could respond, he exclaimed in his long settled “so I says to him” vernacular: “The bill is bullcrap. It’s a thousand pages of crap. I’ll tell ya how you solve the healthcare problem. You give it ‘tree’ pages and make it Medicare for all. Simple. Bam. Done.”Just throwing that out there.

  • http://homepage.mac.com/wildlifeweb/bird/flamingo/honolulu/flamingo01.jpg veralynn

A friend showed me this website. I found it humorous.

  • GItheJOE

Vera,Thanks!!I am really trying to show the mouth breathers the errors of their ways. However, this Healthcare debate is making it difficult. I have little things that I catch them on but it requires human compassion to see their faults. I will keep the doing the Lords/FSM work.Off to bed for now. See you all on the AM.

  • http://homepage.mac.com/wildlifeweb/bird/flamingo/honolulu/flamingo01.jpg veralynn

MrBrinkThat is Obama’s doing on the COBRA. I was laid off in June and my COBRA was reduced from $1100.00 to $400.00. It was reduced in the stimulus package. Thank goodness, I wouldn’t have been able to afford $1100.I also like to hear actual people talking about this. I live in the south and it is a joy when you end up talking to someone whom you thought would be against reform and turns out you were wrong. It happens so rarely here, I really get excited. I admit, I act a little girly when it happens, much to my chagrin.

  • http://homepage.mac.com/wildlifeweb/bird/flamingo/honolulu/flamingo01.jpg veralynn

  • kansasdem

Errmmmmmmmmm, I’m on a Percocet buzz.No Limbaugh jokes please.I’m betting that I’ll get addicted, but thank the lord I have the public option! You know the one called Medicare!I’ll likely be able to get treatment!
