That NBC Poll on the Public Option

Here’s a shocker. NBC changed the wording of their public option poll question and yet they continue to compare today’s numbers with the results from a very different question.

You’ve probably also noticed that the general tone from the “very serious” reporters on MSNBC (Chuck Todd, Savannah Guthrie, etc) is that the president ought to just drop the public option and move on. Chuck Todd almost seems angry about it. Clearly the reason for this is press corp peer pressure — the Very Serious conventional wisdom. All of the Politico/Halperin/Broder conventional wisdom goons think this is a wise and serious approach for the president to take, so it must be true.

But pushing for the White House to drop the public option is equally as crazy and premature as insisting healthcare reform is dead.

@Ex- Sure believe an article written by the Washington Post that has “anonymous sources” cause that means it’s true.

Just as we’ve watched Chris Matthews sliding down the slippery slope of disingenuousness, so too we’ve seen Chuck Todd take the same road over the last year or so. It seems to me that EACH of them has gone out of their way in trying to derail whatever President Obama wants to accomplish. How? By kowtowing to the conservative dialog, even if it isn’t true. Remember the Stimulus battle? How many Republicans were interviewed while that “debate” was going on? 100, 150? How many Dems? I could probably count them on my two hands.

Recently (at least for awhile), it was actually beginning to look like MSNBC was making an effort to become the liberals’ Go To Network and that it would balance the conservative Fox “News”. No such luck. They seem to go just-so-far and then they swing the other way. It’s like watching the Jekyll & Hyde of the broadcast industry. We never know which one will show up on any given day!

So here we are, stuck with another mostlyconservative-leaning cable network and that leaves us only one option. Turn off the TV whenever either of them appear and turn it back on when it’s time for Keith and Rachel.

mrspeel: I did get a bit of satisfaction yesterday watching Chuck Todd have to admit that when he interviewed Obama two weeks ago, Obama made it clear to him that healthcare cannot be reformed without a strong, robust public option. All along, he has been promoting that bullshit that Obama has not been clear on what he wanted in the bill and how badly Obama is doing at getting the things he wants. From my perspective, Obama has gotten pretty much everything he has wanted — from the stimulus bill to cap & trade, just not using the methods they think he should to get where he needs to go. I have been so disappointed in both Chuck Todd and Chris Matthews. I almost can’t bear Matthews anymore.

Chuck is married to a Republican so maybe she’s slowly brainwashing him, but Chris is just plain over-the-hill in his political beliefs. He wants us to go back to the 50s when white men ruled, that’s why he keeps bringing the bigoted Pat Buchanan on his show.

I just read that he had Tom Delay on Hardball yesterday. Why would he even care what a disgraced former member of congress has to say? Ditto, disgraced former Speaker Newt Gingrich?

Chris Matthews has lived in his bubble too long and he’s simply out of touch. As for Chuck Todd, who knows? Maybe he’s doing his best to prove to Morning Joe that he’s big enough to follow in Tim Russert’s shoes in covering the White House after all. Problem is, he’s really not!
