The White House Waffle

by Lee Stranahan

Fringe lunatic group The New York Times reports

Some Democrats and industry lobbyists now argue that, in negotiating deals through Mr. Baucus’s panel with powerful health care interests, the White House was tacitly signaling as early as last spring that it might end up accepting something more modest than the government insurer the president has said he prefers.

The article is balanced but the story shows that the White House may be the single biggest threat to the Public Option. Crazy angry Grampa yelling at a Congressman has no power to derail The Option in favor of weak, industry approved co-ops. The President does.

The threat is real and there’s still time to counter this. This is where all progressives need to be pushing back at this point.

    Ezra Klein today:

The executive simply has limited power here. If the store gets given away, it’s probably not because Obama didn’t want any of the stuff in it. If a strong bill survives the process, it’s probably not because Obama was just so irresistibly persuasive.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/ezra-klein/2009/08/how_much_power_does_obama_have.htmlLee, you’re functioning based upon a skewed sense of how laws — especially massive new legislation like healthcare reform — are made.

@Bob: I mean, exactly. Now the Dems and lobbyists are saying what? That they really wanted to get this done but the President just wasn’t on board enough? Please.Everyone in DC is happy to pass the buck to the President because they know he is the only one who is ever truly politically vulnerable, so they can all just sit back on their asses, not do anything, and keep their jobs. Thanks for helping their cause, Lee.
