Southern Pride

Research 2000 doesn’t have very good news for the GOP:

gop_southern_favorable.jpg

…the Republican Party’s favorability is very weak in Northeast (7% to 87%), and only marginally better in the Midwest (13% to 78%) and West (14% to 75%). In the South, however, 50% have a favorable opinion of the GOP, and only 37% have an unfavorable view.

Frank Rich wrote today:

Now, as then, a Dixie-oriented movement like this won’t remotely capture the White House. Now, unlike then, it is a catastrophe for the Republicans. The old G.O.P. Southern strategy is gone with the wind. The more the party is identified with nasty name-calling, freak-show protestors, immigrant-bashing (the proximate cause of [Joe] Wilson’s outburst at Obama) and, yes, racism, the faster it will commit demographic suicide as America becomes ever younger and more diverse. But Democrats shouldn’t be cocky. Over the short term, the real economic grievances lurking beneath the extremism of the Beck brigades can do damage to both parties. A stopped clock is right twice a day. The recession-spawned anger that Beck has tapped into on the right could yet find a more mainstream outlet in a populist revolt from the left and center.

The catch here is that the Democrats can’t really seem to get their shit together. If they could take a strong stand on, say, healthcare and actually lead, they’d be able to seize the initiative. Instead, Harry Reid is blowing it.

The thing the Democrats should always bear in mind is the American people’s uncanny knack for shooting themselves in the foot. Americans will choose the wrong leaders for the wrong reasons in spite of themselves. They’ll vote for crazy Republicans if the crazy Republicans appear to be “stronger” than the other guys. And the consequences will be predictably tragic. It’s the Democrats’ game to lose.

The Republicans are about 10-15 years away from being America’s version of France’s National Front Party; garnering about maybe 8% of the vote; maybe a few congressional seats here and there.Fuck ‘em.

I agree to a point. I think that despite the Democrats’ perceived weakness or lack of cohesion, the wingnut crazy train has left the independents at the station. That’s really going to hurt them. A self-avowed registered Democrat may be pissed off at their party currently, but not to the point of actually voting against their best interests.

Also, did you catch that Rich was “wrong” on this?

There were no public encomiums for McCain or Bush. No Senate leader spoke to the gathering, and perhaps only Palin and Ron Paul would have been welcome from the ranks of what passes for G.O.P. presidential timber.

Perhaps no “Senate leader” was at the event, but that leads people reading to believe that there were no senators there. Jim DeMint spoke at the 9/12 rally. I also believe that Frank Rich is wrong in the title of his column. There is no possible way Glenn Beck is right twice a day.

In terms of organizing say, a Tug of War team, the GOP will always at least have this going for them. Some might be rednecks, birthers or deathers, gun nuts, right wing militia freaks, KKK…whatever…but when they start that chant, “Je-SUS…Je-SUS…Je-SUS” they all manage to pull together. On the other end of the rope, the Democrats…chanting in discordant pairs and myopic duets: “END DADT!”"Marriage Equality NOW!”Health Care is a RIGHT! Support Single Payer”"Investigate Torture!”"End the War!”"Feed the Hungry!”"Stop Global Warming!”"Single Amputee Inuit Mothers United to Save the Northern Shaggy Donair!”In 2008 enough of the left managed to at least face the same direction – sheer numbers were enough. Plus, the GOP has the teflon shoes of GWB and his Dick.In 2012, expect the GOP to shed the disheartened inevitability of Bush being tossed on the junk heap of bad decisions and get all Holy War about the election. That’s always dangerous. One problem seems to be that by not magically fixing every single-issue issue immediately, AND precisely in the way those loudest supporters demand, (and while the left remains opposed to Republican fuckwittery and incompetence)…large segments of Blues have petulantly, impatiently stopped pulling for Obama the way they did. They certainly ain’t now, and I don’t expect improvement. The GOP crows “We WARNED you about ‘Buyer’s Remorse’!”, when on all the evidence it’s pretty hard not to be impressed with the distance we’ve come from Count Von Bush and Dr. Cheney: Ended torture, saved the economy, stock market is up, Iraq is drawing down, equal pay legislation, and (fingers crossed) a shot at a public option and the end of massive and disgusting insurance industry profits from sickness and death.EIGHT MONTHS!!But he HASN’T cleared the way for gay marriage in all 50 states. He hasn’t ended DODT.He didn’t repeal the Patriot Act.After NINE WHOLE MONTHS!!! ?!?!?He isn’t crapping unicorns and farting rainbows.Except that relations are improving with Russia (killed missile defense…technically stupid, insanely expensive and unnecessarily provocative), cut taxes, cut defense spending, shot some pirates, rescued journalists from North Korea via The Big Dog, Ahmadinnerplate seems more open to talking, IRAQ is not descending into genocidal Sunni Shi’ite civil war…”He’s not living up to his promises! I voted for change!”Somebody call the fucking WHAAAAAAMBULANCE.The hopping Eskimo MILFs are so pissed off about the fate of the wooly donair being relegated to the back burner they have no energy for the economy or foreign policy. THEY still want the “change” that was promised to them last time. They want donairs and they want them NOW!Sadly they’re too impatient and short-sighted to understand two simple facts:1. The only way donairs ever get the attention they deserve is by assisting the president in accomplishing goals.2. If we let those twisted Jesus freaks and vicious hypocrites back into the white house, we’re all fucked. They’ll hunt down, kill and eat the last of the donairs (using white bread instead of damn Arab pita, and mayonnaise in place of garlic sauce, which sounds French!)I like the numbers, too, Bob. But if that’s the case – The PEOPLE hate the GOP and like the Democrats, and there’s a Democratic president, Senate AND Congress, what the fuck is the hold up on “This is the health care reform I promised. This is what the people want. Rahm, my brother and I drafted this up months ago. This is what we’re doing”?Here. Have a donair.

Stupid is as stupid does. These idiots are never going to win back the Whitehouse. They’ve only further exposed their lunacy and their ignorant base is pretty much all that’s left. Sure, there may even be some sane Republican supporters out there but, their not getting any attention because they are an even smaller part of the party. Face it…no one would want to admit to being a part of this party of racists and inbreds. Look at the study this week that points out that only 23% of Oklahoma highschool kids could name the first President of the United States. These apples don’t fall far from their trees! Stupid, rednecks! I’m just guessing that kids here in the Northeast would have aced that question.

Once again, I am sitting here wondering how a bunch of lower income white people can think that the Republican party is the party for them.I hate to say this since I am from the deep south, I guess there are a bunch of stupid voters there.

  • caribbeanobserver

The basis of all this is that the MSM thrust is the fact that they only focus on what the base of the repubs is saying or doing, and an up to the minute pundit opinion,ad nauseum! Are the stoic Republicans saying anything of value at all, apart from the daily charade of well-orchestrated outbursts and oppoition to all and sundry? I think not!

  • Lord Blankfiend

It would be great for this country if the sensible, reasonable Republicans that are left out there formed a new, 3rd party – they could call it, like, the Conservative Party or something – and the tea-baggers kept the Republican name and they could just go ahead and be America’s National Front; our nutty, racist, militia-forming, Jesus-loving, Sean Hannity blow-up-doll-humping National Front Party. Keep ‘em all in one place, under one tent, and then they could go ahead and hold up any signs they wanted to.

I don’t care what the polls say today or even tomorrow. If the Dems head into next year’s election without a decent record of achievement, they’re gonna lose a huge amount of seats. Voters choose individual candidates, not parties. If your typical voter is looking at choosing a Republican, they’re looking at the person, not the wingnut party of Bachmann and Beck. OI course, the irony is that, once said Repub gets to congress, he will be just a mouthpiece tool for the abovementioned nutjobs.Still, don’t think the Repubs won’t get the White House back sooner rather than later, or that we’re looking at a permanent Democratic majority.I’m scared…very scared.

Bar graphs provide a nice visual depiction: The South either waves or salutes, the rest of the country is giving the GOP the finger.
