Stare Down…Who?

by Lee Stranahan

More details coming. A major speech. And a fight with Congressional…Republicans, right? No, wait.

White House officials say Obama will be “more prescriptive” in shaping the final health care deal. Although House leaders have said their members will demand the inclusion of a public insurance option, Obama has no plans to insist on it himself, the officials said.

“We have been saying all along that the most important part of this debate is not the public option, but rather ensuring choice and competition,” an aide said. “There are lots of different ways to get there.”

Some administration officials welcome a showdown with liberal lawmakers if they argue they would rather have no health care law than an incremental one. The confrontation would allow Obama to show he is willing to stare down his own party to get things done.

The mainstream political narrative is always that the liberals must be slapped down by the grown-ups.

Well, Lee…We shall see if you have been right all along or… if those of us that have stuck with our President have made the right choice. And the answer is…….

My job as a activist citizen is not to stand by any politician, but to fight for productive policy. I will not stand with (volunteer for, donate money to, or support) anyone that does not at least support the public option. Most of the people I talk to–in Kansas, no less–want a single-payer system of healthcare because they understand that it is the only way to get costs under control. It is SAD enough that we are being forced, by the party that we helped to win seats and the White House, to swallow this “public option is off the table” CRAP, but now we are being told we have to stand by a President who won’t even fight for a public option? The Change We Need? What Change that Who Needs? This is not change and it is not what we need.
