They’re Hurting America

To paraphrase Bill Maher, yes, too many Americans are uninformed doofs. Here’s the latest illustration: a poll showing that people don’t understand healthcare reform. Yeah, no kidding.

And at the risk of sounding like an apologist, it’s not the president’s fault. While it’s probably true that he could be more forceful and Moyers-ish with his explanations, President Obama has been explaining the reasons and means for achieving reform since the earliest days of the campaign.

The disconnect, as John Cole points out, is the corporate media. They’ve been predictably covering the politics-as-sports debate, but not the intracacies of the policy, which they ought to be doing. So it’s not surprising that cable news is leading the charge in suggesting that it’s the president who hasn’t been forthright enough. Let it be said that the media never misses an opportunity to make excuses for its massive breaches of integrity.

But let’s say for a moment that the president explained reform and the public option perfectly. Exactly like the press is prescribing. Even then, they’d very likely 1) find another anti-reform meme to inject into their “smackdowns” and half-time shows, and 2) they’d still be inviting serial liars like Mike Pence, unabashed morons like Maria Bartiromo, and centrist capitulators like Harold Ford onto their air to spread misinformation about reform and further confuse viewers.

Ultimately, though, any poll based upon whether Americans are confused and uninformed will probably have similar results when it comes to any number of important things. Asking whether Americans are confused is like asking if monkeys fling their own poo. But the corporate media isn’t helping to ameliorate this and, to quote Jon Stewart, the they’re, in fact, hurting America.

It scares the crap outa’ me how truly gullible, “stoopid,” ignorant and prone to mob mentality too many people are!!!Or is it that we just hear about the frightening, idiotic extremist fringe NUT cases!!!These people are driving cars!!How many functioning brain cells can they possibly have??!!!Love Bob’s site. Free, cathartic venting usually among like-minded peeps. grins.I need that.

This is true, and it is so frustrating that it is not held as conventional wisdom by those discussing health reform.America is definitely being hurt.

I’m reminded of a scene from The Simpsons Movie.Marge is trying to explain to Homer why it is not a good idea to have a twenty foot silo full of pig shit in the backyard.Homer is trying to hear her words, but is paying more attention to the movie loop in his mind, the one with the toy monkey banging the cymbals. Our current situation seems similar to me.“But let’s say for a moment that the president explained reform and the public option perfectly.”He’s done that. Well, I’d hesitate to use the word ‘perfectly’, but in every other regard, he’s done that. And the Wingnut Party has been the perfect toy monkey for the collective mind of the nation, but instead of banging cymbals, this monkey is holding up a sign that reads:Health Care Reform Will Kill YouObama’s remedy is to keep speaking truth to lies. That might work if the MSM didn’t have a vested interest in prolonging the bout.I’m thinking that a better approach would have been to co-opt every conceivable wingnut fabrication at the outset and say it first.Example: (again – said before any debate has started) “You know why we need health care reform? I’ll tell you why – because right now the status quo, in the form of the for-profit health insurance industry, is nothing more than a vast conglomeration of death panels, rationing out care and deciding, ultimately, when it’s time to pull the plug on granny!!!Somethin’ like that.

WOW WOW WOW WOW!And at the risk of sounding like an apologist, it’s not the president’s fault. While it’s probably true that he could be more forceful and Moyers-ish with his explanations, President Obama has been explaining the reasons and means for achieving reform since the earliest days of the campaign._______________I find this statement just stunning!!!!!!!Candidate Obama was AMAZING at staying on message. He was brilliant at Rapid Response! He was quick to control his message! He was incredible at handling misinformation! He used technology, the media, and even texting to communicate with his supporters!Remember getting a text message from the Obama campaign?Remember that streamlined, technologically savvy campaign? And now you let him — and his team — off the hook?Just incredible. If anyone can deliver concise message, respond to misinformation, and get his own message back on track it was Candidate Obama. He certainly is capable and knows how; and, he’s not.Excuses, excuses, excuses.

I agree Bob – the corporate media is a huge part of the problem. It’s the Iraq War all over again – after all of their 24-hour coverage of that situation leading up to the war, a poll was taken the night of the invasion saying that a strong majority of Americans thought we were invading Iraq b/c Hussein was directly responsible for 9/11. The “news” is failing America in an epic way….though there’s definitely an element of willful ignorance going on. People don’t want to hear about the details healthcare bill. They want to watch celebrities and fat people dance.Terri: How exactly has Obama changed from candidate Obama?Controlling his message: Remember when we didn’t healthcare debate for two days b/c the MSM was making a HUGE FUCKING DEAL about him saying that some stupid cops had acted stupidly? Not 2 days later, he had completely neutralized that situation.Communicating with supporters: I remember the text messages….I don’t think him and his people can text us now that they’re in the White House…but are you not getting the daily emails from the Obama White House on various healthcare topics? I can’t even remember how I got on that list during the campaign, but I get pretty much daily emails from the Obama team. Today’s was from Mitch Stewart at BarackObama.com. So it’s not like they’re not TRYING to use the network they built during the campaign. And it’s not their fault if his supporters are less active in helping him achieve his agenda than they were in electing him.Responding to misinformation: Well, I just don’t know what to say about this one. He’s gone on TV dozens of times to address healthcare concerns, and over the past few weeks has started addressing the nonsense directly. He’s ridiculed and debunked ‘death panels’ and ‘rationing’ et al. on national television, several times. What more do you want him to do?

http://www.openleft.com/diary/14901/a-flipflop-on-triangulationA Flip-Flop on Triangulation?by: David SirotaWed Sep 02, 2009 at 13:21October 15th, 2007:U.S. sick of ‘triangulation,’ Obama saysAddressing a convention center rally dominated by students, Obama said that he had spoken out against going to war in Iraq in 2002, even as advisers told him it would be a mistake to challenge a popular president, George W. Bush. Then an Illinois state lawmaker, Obama said he did so because he did not want to ”enter the United States Senate already having compromised on core principles.””We’ve had enough of … triangulation and poll-driven politics,” he said. ”That’s not what we need right now.”September 2, 2009:On health care, Obama’s willingness to forgo the public option is sure to anger his party’s liberal base. But some administration officials welcome a showdown with liberal lawmakers…The confrontation would allow Obama to show he is willing to stare down his own party to get things done.”We have been saying all along that the most important part of this debate is not the public option, but rather ensuring choice and competition,” an aide said. We’ll see if the triangulation actually happens – if it does, it would be a pretty clear violation of the very kind of tactics Obama disparaged.

True, Bob, that the big O is Michael Jordan playing on a bad team (also frm Bill Maher), the refs (MSM) are being played by the cheaters on the other side. No help there. But what if Obama is not interested in a public option after all, if for no other reason than Rahm Emanuel doesn’t want big pharma and big insurance donating to the Rs in ’10 or ’12? Single-payer was never on the table. Where does that leave ‘reform’ if it’s not really reform?
