Senators Klobuchar, Feingold, Bayh, Webb and McCaskill for voting with the Republicans to allow states to opt out of federal funds for bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements.

The measure passed. But screw them anyway.

Why exactly would you not want federal funds for improving safety?Autoindustry lobby?

This whole idea of being able to selectively receive aid, which you know will be abused in the most Republican way (refuse aid that is perceived as “Big Government”, accept aid that benefits industry/business) is a dandy little conservative invention and one that they should not be able to use. Of course, requiring them to accept all of the aid or none of it will just make them wet their Tenth Amendment/State’s Rights/Wingnut pants even more furiously than usual. How did our entire nation manage to devolve into an episode of Jerry fucking Springer?

This measure would help lower health costs in a few ways, no?Fuck’em.

But…why? And I mean, I often find “cyclists” annoying (I’m in Manhattan), and I cannot see a reason to vote against this. How many wars do they think we should be funding with all the money the federal government gets? Because that is clearly the only thing worthy of gov’t spending.p.s. Is it possible that they will use their own funds?

Exactly, Ashby. And when callers to my local radio station were on a rabid anti-cyclist rant one day, David Sirota told the general audience “don’t call this show complaining about the price of gasoline or global warming or traffic congestion if you are going to also complain about cyclists on the roads.”This and the sign-waiving/yawn/texting disrespect shown the president in the joint session only drives the point home that rudeness, crass behavior and general childishness no longer know any bounds.

Actually I agree with Feingold, after reading the linked article.

As a New Yorker, I don’t see a need to spend tax dollars on bicycle paths in Oklahoma. I mean, in my world, more bicycle paths is a good thing, but the federal government has no business mandating such things.

Let’s not pretend this is equivalent to (for example) health care, where the federal government is the best and most logical “single payer” or entity to coordinate a national plan. When it comes to bicycle paths, state and local governments have enough money to address such issues should they choose.

The one name that screams out at me there is Feingold! WTF!

My Klobuchar?! There must’ve been a good reason…but then MN has tons of bike trails that are state funded, so perhaps that’s why?Politics sucks.
