Know Hope

Sullivan on the Nobel:

We do know that we were facing a spiral of conflict that, unchecked, could have taken the world to the abyss. I see this prize as an endorsement of his extraordinary reorientation of world politics, and as an encouragement to see it through. In the midst of our domestic battles, and their ill-temper (from which I have not been immune lately), this is an attempt to tell us: look up for a moment, see how far we’ve come in pivoting away from global conflict, and give this man a break for his efforts and the massive burden he now bears.

And, in the darkness that still threatens, know hope.

I hope that someday, regardless of pet policies and issues, we’ll all be fairly unified in the notion that this president’s leadership style pulled us back from the brink and sparked some positivity in an otherwise cynical, cold era. If nothing else, and even if we’re too hip to admit it, America was starving for genuinely steady, strong, pragmatic, thoughtful and, yes, inspirational leadership that doesn’t need to be accessorized with flight suits or cowboy hats. While, like all presidents, he’s not an infallible iron man, I think history will note that we made the right choice last year.

I agree with Bill Maher: he’s not “our boyfriend.” But he’s a crucial role model, both in terms of American leadership on the world stage, as well as for millions of people here at home. Agree or disagree — flawless or not — this is important and serious, and I think with our modern American tendency towards aloofness and our quest for hipster cred we tend to forget:

That’s a great photo. Here’s my favorite editorial cartoon from yesterday (and most ranged from juvenile to stupid):Obama/Nobel prize cartoon

These thoughtful words and photo are a great way to start the day! Thanks! The Obama/Nobel prize cartoon is so true.

I love the cartoon, thanks for sharing. It reminds me of this video…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5QigRkg9G8

Bob – I’ve mostly pulled away from political discourse, as it is unbecoming of me as a Baha’i. But – I remember your original endorsement of then Senator Obama, your rallying cry for us to endorse something bigger than just politics. It is why I became a “Cescan” – it trumps your admittedly good looks as the chief reason I’m in your fan club….thanks for holding true to that. :) QT

Damned right it’s some “hipster cred” bullshit, Bob. I know posers when I see them.Bill Maher can kiss my black ass with that “He’s not your boyfriend” bunk. Is Maher the jealous prick at the bar that rags on the dude a girl he’s digging compliments offhandedly? Well, is he? Seems like it.The criticisms Maher put forth as he hid behind that catchphrase of his were the same pathetic talking points for dummies that were repeated on all the networks, I’m sure. Shit, I got home, flipped on the television, and I heard the same shit, damn-near verbatim, at least five damned times in under an hour and a half. How many times are we going to allow vain media swine on the sidelines dictate, or much worse, being a damned impediment? The last thing Obama needed was for those of Maher’s ilk (you know, so-called “liberals” or let’s just say, “bleeding hearts”) making a moot, pseudo-intellectual point about the irony of a Nobel being given to a president overseeing a “war” he did not start himself? It’s complete and utter bullshit that does nothing but absolve the incompetent asses that engaged in the so-called “Cowboy Diplomacy” in the first place. You want to give explanations as to why you feel President Obama got a prize he did not deserve, be more specific and don’t just jump on the swine media bandwagon, which is what I saw many doing yesterday. It was a completely PATHETIC display of hubris on the part everyone that felt the need to comment without understanding what actually went into the decision. What the fuck is this – Survivor, American Idol, or Dancing with the Stars? Some of us pretend like it is one or the other.

Watching Republicans, the corporate media, and even some liberals try to spin the Nobel Peace Prize as a negative is hilarious if it weren’t being pushed with a straight & so serious face. What a bunch of ignorant losers.I’m laughing at all of them.Everytime I hear, “President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, but…..”ha ha ha!“But…but….but….”He won the Nobel freakin’ Peace Prize! This reminds me of all the mockery and ridicule Al Gore received, or the ridicule Jimmy Carter and Al Gore still receives.Only worse.I remember thinking, we had a chance to elect a man in 2000 who later went on to do good things and champion human causes and was praised for doing so by everyone but the dipshit righties and condescending-smug-asshole-Scarborough-types in the media of America who spout their douchery with subtlety and calm as wolves in intellectual sheep clothing. So we instead elect the village idiot who wipes his ass with treatise and international law while boldly lying in the faces of every human being on the planet to redistribute 3 trillion dollars to war profiteers and their crony shareholders. Millions have died due to republican “leadership” over the years and they crushed us with debt with little more than a smirk and a fart. Some people can tell the difference between dipshits and genuine do-gooders. Some people defend and honor the dipshits to the death. Almost 60 million people voted for McCain and Sarah Palin last Fall, not knowing or even caring that history has already proven them to be flakes and partisan kooks. These people failed to recognize a do-gooder and it almost cost us precious time in regouping and altering the course of self-destructing policies. If it was up to John McCain, we’d be a country that threatens, rather than cools. “We’re all Georgians today,” and bomb-bomb Iran isn’t statesmanship. It’s irrational and reactionary. This isn’t the language or leadership we need and despite that, almost 60 million people voted for Sarah Palin to be the face of America.Jimmy Carter may not have been the best president, but he wasn’t an arms trading/dealing shill for big oil and the wealthiest 1% and is no where near as bad as he’s been slandered by these same loud mouthed haters we see today. Reagan turned America from the world’s primary creditor nation into the world’s biggest debtor nation. A B-actor playing the role of president, really(a kindly version of Jon Voight?). This guy is a hero to the right, and even those less tuned in to reality and history who really dug the “tear down this wall moment” still recall him fondly. Genuinely and even proudly duped by the mirage the revisionist narrative.Jimmy Carter is a decent man. But they stone him to this day with pettiness and downright evil-mother-fucker attacks. Not this time you rancid-tongued witches and little demons. This time we made the correct choice and elected the guy most like all the others who’ve done much to build bridges and inspire the world. So now you can sit on the sidelines and throw garbage at good people, spit, and conspire to destroy. You’re just ugly and your minds are poisoned. The President won the Nobel Peace Prize. That’s exactly why I elected him.

Thank you for saying this Bob. I too have stayed away from the fray, trying to remain positive and knowing that we just have to have some sort of trust in our choice of Barack Obama. The photo that you posted is one of many that were just released by the White House. All you need to do is go through these photos and look at the faces of the people who come to listen to him. I dare anyone to find a similar photo of anyone looking at George W. Bush with the same look of hope and admiration on their faces. It is so true that a picture is worth a thousand words, or better, it paints a thousand words.
