Reality Check for the Polling Deniers

I’ve received more than a few wingnut emails about the ABC News / Washington Post poll from yesterday showing the shrinkage of the Republican Party, the popularity of the president and the overwhelming support for the public option. The gripe is that the polling sample favored Democrats. Steve Benen debunks this claim:

The latest CBS News poll found 22% identify themselves as Republicans. The latest AP poll found 21%. Ipsos/McClatchy put the number at 19%. Gallup had the highest total for the GOP, at 27%, but the Pew Forum study had it at 23%, while NBC/WSJ found 18%.

Average those together, and we find about 21% of the public are self-identified Republicans. What did the Post/ABC find? 20%.

The Wall Street Journal showed 18 percent GOP party identifications? Liberal bias!

I tend to take these media swine political polls with a grain of salt. I do this because they always dole them out to lure you in, then when a crucial political contest arrives, the polls that were once trending downward for Republicans all claim to trend upward in reaction to some political minutia that only busy-body needle-noses in Washington media circles give a damn about. Classic bait ‘n’ switch tactics. Now I have no doubt that the GOP is suffering is hemorrhaging voters, or at the very least, people that claim with pride that they are “REPUBLICANS!” The way I know this is much more organic than taking the word of some random poll. I travel around the country more than five times a year for my job. I’ve visited some pretty far out areas of the country. As much as the media attempts to downplay the impact of the last eight years on the so-called “GOP brand,” most folks I talk with are almost apologetic when they admit to being “Republicans.” It’s as if they are embarrassed by a family member whose an alcoholic or drug abuser. They call themselves “conservatives” or “independents.” They are members of the Republican party, yet they’re so reluctant to claim allegiance with any single thing the party is committed to at this stage. They have sharp words for the Democratic party, so don’t get it twisted. But they tend to merely criticize actual policies, not the party itself. When discussing the Republican party, they GO OFF!!! They rail against Bush Jr., Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, and, unfortunately, Powell. They also go off on McCain and Palin. Last year, the more self-identified “Republicans” that I spoke with, the more they were convinced that the party itself was not even serious about last year’s election. I tell them how much of a fan I am of Palin’s…je ne sais quoi, and they first lambaste McCain for picking her, then they go off on her for being knowingly unprepared for the national stage. One conservative woman I spoke with called her a “whore” even. I’m sure she meant to add the “attention” adjective, but, then again…this woman was going on about Cindy McCain opinion on the Palin nod. Ha!Anyway…it’s much more fun paying no mind to media swine and polls, and just talking to your fellow countrymen about their political point of view. In fact, it’s downright lazy to depend solely on the pontificating dorks in the media. I look at all this sensationalism passing for political discourse and I nod my head. It is all designed to make the pundits look like sages, yet all it really does it make them look like a bunch of bored hens gossiping in a most mundanely routine manner. Pathetic!

You’d think that the wingnuts would be used to losing by now. It’s really quite funny. They suck and everybody knows it.Now, off topic here, I just read an article on the dailykos about the Republicans blocking a vote on unemployment extensions. Senators Kyle and Hatch are behind this and according to the article, they want to add amendments to the bill about ACORN and Immigration. The article states that the Dems have tried twice to bring the bill to the floor through unanimous consent and were blocked twice by the Republicans. As BarbinMD notes, the Dems could simply bring a motion to proceed to the floor. The Republicans could then mount a filibuster but, the Dems aren’t even willing to do this to see if the Republicans have the guts to filibuster an extension of unemployment benefits while the country is deep in the throws of high unemployment. This is what pisses me off about Reid and even the whitehouse to a certain extent. Why isn’t the President out there? He should schedule a news conference for 2pm this afternoon and blast the Republicans to the press. Paint them as being way too busy working on destroying Obama to pass this legislation which would help Democrats and Republicans. The whitehouse often lets this kind of shit just fester and where the hell are the “reporters” on this? Are they aware that unemployment is high in this country? I assume they are because they’re always looking for ways to blame the lack of millions of jobs being created in 10 months since Obama took office.
