Republican Malkinization

By way of a follow-up to my Huffington Post column yesterday, you should definitely check out the articles posted today by EJ Dionne, Politico and Dave Weigel each covering the Republican-Wingnut-Complex.

Weigel definitely hit the mark with this:

The Democrats are in worse political shape than they were a year ago because unemployment is at 9.8 percent, the war in Afghanistan has grown less popular, and the bailouts of struggling banks are seen as wastes of money that haven’t worked. Republicans benefit when they talk about this stuff. But Beck and the others don’t let them talk about this stuff. For the past few months, they have moved the discussion onto fantasy terrain, accusing the president of reaching for dictatorial powers and surrounding himself with “radicals” who want to destroy capitalism.

Weigel goes on to correlate the current wingnut loud noises with the liberal reaction Bush’s handling of Katrina. Imagine if we had mostly ignored the Katrina incompetence and instead focused on a conspiracy theory involving an old quote from a Bush administration official no one really cares about. We would have been idiots.

This is a completely unfair comparison, because the war, the bailouts and the unemployment are not the Democrats’ fault. Sure, they are not fixing these problems as rapidly as they should, but it’s still not their fault that they have to clean up after eight years of the republicans’ shit-flinging fiesta.

One of the problems with the wingnuts is that they imply that Obama promised to undo everything they fucked up and do it within the first 10 months. It’s complete bullshit!

Good point, but in most cases the incumbents are generally on the defense. In this case the Republicans are shooting themselves in the foot. One party is moving to address the issues slowly and the other party went batshit crazy.Personally I wish Malkin, Beck, and Limbaugh gets louder. The Republican party will continue to tank until the moderates over there hold a revolt and repudiate the stupid. It’s a win throughtout the entire spectrum of politics.

Yes, except that there are a good 25% of Americans that are 1) of low intelligence, and 2) harboring some very nasty predjudices and resentments, and these people are seeing their worldview validated and encouraged on tv, and more like them are being indoctrinated.

This has been the pattern all year. Normally, the incumbent party is on the defensive and loses seats in the midterm elections. And with the economy still hurting, the democrats are particular vulnerable. But instead of capitalizing on it, the GOP are embracing the Glenn Beck conspiracy nutjob theories. Instead of hitting the dems where they are vulnerable, Becky is howling about how volunteerism is somehow a conspiracy between Obama and Chairman Mao.Rather than steer clear of this stuff, though, the GOP is doubling down on the crazy. They’re turning themselves into a fringe party and they don’t even realize it because they’re sealed up in the Fox News echo chamber.
