Senate Democrats have begun discussions on a compromise approach to health care reform that would establish a robust, national public option for insurance coverage but give individual states the right to opt out of the program.
This wouldn't provide the same massive bargaining power as a national public plan, but it would provide a robust public option for all the states that don't opt out. Although I don't know if this "robust" proposal means everyone could sign up, or if it's limited to the uninsured, small businesses and the self-employed. It might be too early to tell.
