Explain No-Bid Contracts to Her

NBC Philadelphia:

Four-year-old Paige Bennethum really, really didn’t want her daddy to go to Iraq.
So much so, that when Army Reservist Staff Sgt. Brett Bennethum lined up in formation at his deployment this July, she couldn’t let go.
No one had the heart to pull her away.

Absolutely heartbreaking. I hope she gets to see her daddy soon.

FUCK no-bid contracts! Explain the entire premise of the entire godamn war to her!

  • Curly Lasagna

That is just about the saddest picture I have seen in a long, long time……………….

  • Canadian Simon

That’s the saddest thing I’ve ever seen.

I’m having trouble typing through my tears. I’m single and don’t have any children but, this little girl might as well be mine because I feel for her….desparately!

  • keithalso

While I’m blubbering and getting the keypad all wet here…. geeze that is a sad picture… what is the no-bid contract connection? Not being an ass here, I just don’t know what that has to do with this heart breaking image. I agree with Rogect8.

@Rogect8 and Keithalso:The no-bid contracts for Halliburton were pretty much the dirty impetus behind the war. War profiteering for Cheney’s old buddy at the cost of little girls losing their daddies. But, yeah, I probably could’ve used a more concise headline.

That just tears me up. How many years now will that little girl go without knowing her daddy? What effect is that going to have on her in the long run? So sad. It’s hard to not see my own baby standing there. I’m such a big softy.

Hey Redmond,I definitely see the connection w/ the no-bid contracts (and I wasn’t trying to be critical of your headline). I was just making a point about the broader pointlessness of the war. I think it’s been on my mind a lot recently because we’ve been talking about the legality/illegality of the war in my International Law class all week….and I keep trying to figure out what it was we were supposed to be accomplishing by going there in the first place.Sadly, I think you’re right. The only answers I seem to end up with all have something to do with oil. Not to mention the fact that we absolutely, 100% violated International Law by going there…the same International Law we were supposedly going there to enforce.Keep up the great work man, I’ve been really enjoying your posts recently. Especially “Why did Jesus have to be such a Commie?” I’ve been spreading it around to my friends all week. They all think it’s as hilarious/disturbing as I do (including my little brother and his friends at seminary).

Absolutely no worries. I appreciate the discourse from you and keithalso and didn’t at all perceive it as criticism.I struggled with the headline for this one because I literally had to steel myself every time I looked at the picture then read the words “No one had the heart to pull her away.”Any rational person has to ask “Why? What was the point of this whole war?”

I wonder what runs through a Republican’s mind when they see this picture?

  • veralynn

Nothing but the flag cm. All they see is the flag and what it stands for, they don’t see the men and women and the children. They don’t see the cost of war, just nationalistic pride. Scary.

Trust me, they dont even see what the flag really stands for, they only see jingoistic myths from WWII.
