Bad Idea Jeans

Add this one to the bad ideas list: Vice Presidential Candidate John Edwards. Good one, Mr. Edwards. Sabotage the Obama campaign in exchange for an endorsement.

I think that’s Bob Odenkirk from Mr. Show in that spot with a speaking part for about 2 seconds…Another interesting Plouffe admission is that it was the Obama campaign who planted the (true) $400 haircut story about Edwards.http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1109/A_haircut_tip.html?showall

I was going to say that I can’t believe the Clinton campaign didn’t jump at the chance, until you see by reading the link that we’re talking the SC primary time frame. I suppose that by the time Edwards actually endorsed he could see the writing on the wall, and his 18 delegates were not going to save the day.I still say that with proportional representation starting at 15% of the vote in any state, it’s not that hard to see a scenario where Edwards stayed in the race through Tsunami Tuesday, and ended up with 100-150 pledged delegates before his campaign would have ran out of gas. Then consider how a ‘kingmaking’ endorsement would have played when the affair was confirmed about a month before the Democratic convention. Maybe it’s something the DNC wants to think about between now and 2016?

what’s funny is that Edwards thought his endorsement would help Obama with blue collar southerners. He made the same pitch to John Kerry and we all remember how that worked out. Still, the Edwards endorsement was huge, I believe it happened the day Clinton won WV and KY by huge margins, totally took away any momentum she might’ve gained, and shortly after is when the news came out about his mistress. Perfect timing.BTW, great SNL clip. Right in the middle of their heyday….Mike Myers, Phil Hartman, Kevin Nealon…God I miss that.

What struck me is not low-life Edwards, but Obama’s strong and appropriate reaction. From the TPM article:Plus I couldn’t imagine Obama agreeing this far out to lock in his running mate without going through any process or even being certain that we would be the ones making a selection.Obama’s answer was quick and firm: he would cut no deals. If he won, he did not want to be locked in to any personnel matters, and he had little interest in deciding on a vice presidential pick in the heat of the primary campaign. We decided he would talk to Edwards personally and make clear there could be no promises. During that conversation, Obama reiterated that we wanted John’s support…______This shows the brilliant Obama team maneuvering we all witnessed during the campaign that made us all believe in and support Obama. He knew what to do.He was strong and correct. He had a good intuitive sense and outstanding political maneuvers. That was Candidate Obama.Where did those skills, good judgement and intuition go now that he’s president?During the campaign he always seemed right on the mark.He does not negotiate like this now.Now he’s just a generic, predictable, president.
