Bush Didn’t Say A Goddamn Thing

The Bush administration, while workers were still digging through the rubble at ground zero, waited nine days to say anything about the failed Shoe Bomber attack. And when they finally responded, it went like this:

“The White House has been monitoring the situation since early on today,” McClellan said, according to a Washington Post article published on December 23. The lead statement came from Swift, who lauded the “heroic acts” of “the flight attendants and passengers who helped subdue the suspect.”

Little changed in the days ahead. The Washington Post, citing administration sources, also reported on Sunday December 23 that Bush would seek an increase in domestic security funds as the centerpiece of his 2003 budget request. On Monday December 24, CNN reported that Bush called members of the U.S. military stationed overseas to pass along holiday wishes. He was joined at Camp David that day by “the extended Bush clan… including the President’s parents, the former President and the First Lady.”

Compare that with the Obama administration. “Human and systemic failure,” the president said today.

Oh, and by the way the Bushies didn’t say a damn thing about the Beltway Snipers either.

And one more thing, Pat Buchanan, the Shoe Bomber is currently rotting in an American prison after being prosecuted in an American courtroom.

I was arguing with some huffpo blogger (Nelson Montana (Nelson Montana?!?!) about whether Buchanan was right or wrong in his call to not give the Panty Bomber the same rights as an American and whether we should use “enhanced interrogation techniques.” He threw down the usual “what if your kid was kidnapped would you want the police to torture the kidnapper to get his location” argument. Also, we should remember that Pat Buchanan is no fan of Miranda v. Arizona.

Dave Neiwert of Crooks and Liars puts it best. Apparently Rove was all over fox yesterday with more of his bullshit.”On Hannity, he claimed that by filing criminal charges, “we treat him as a guy who tried to knock over a Seven-Eleven or got caught shoplifting.”Memo to Karl: Convenience-store robbers and shoplifters do not get charged with terrorism in federal court. Just sayin’.Moreover, the problem with Rove’s claim that “this shows the difference” between the Bush and Obama administrations is flatly false (aka a lie).Faced with nearly identical circumstances with would-be shoe bomber Richard Reid — who was attempting to use the exact same kind of explosive on an American flight — the Bush administration in 2001 did exactly the same thing: it filed criminal charges and eventually tried Reid in federal court. What’s worth noting is that Reid, too, was potentially an intelligence bonanza, since he had numerous operational ties with Khalid Sheikh Muhammad. Then there was Zacarias Moussaoui, a French citizen who was eventually convicted of plotting with Al Qaeda to participate in the 9/11 attacks. He, too, was treated as a federal criminal by the Bush administration. Finally, it should be noted that declaring suspects “enemy combatants” — especially when they are captured away from the field of battle — is actually a legal minefield fraught with far greater uncertainty than the use of federal criminal statutes. The classic example of this was the case of Jose Padilla, who was declared an “enemy combatant” by the Bush administration and whose case wound up taking years to be settled by the Supreme Court — which eventually insisted that he be tried in federal court. Padilla’s case was somewhat different, since he is a U.S. citizen, but one can rest assured that the issue of habeas corpus central to his case would be resurrected should Obama have followed Rove’s advice. But then, anyone who follows Karl Rove’s advice deserves everything that inevitably will “Spot on!

    “Nelson Montana”?I’m going with pedophile.

Oddly enough, he comes off as more of a troll than a HuffPo blogger. He just makes incendiary statements to get people riled up. Now he’s floating the bullshit line that some may see the actions of the passengers as excessive force, that he will be let go and now that he’s been granted rights he can sue the other passengers in civil court.Honestly, it’s like being at a teabagger rally. These guys are so afraid of everything. Terrorists. Brown freedom-hating people. Obama (oh wait, that last one pretty much covered him). Aliens. The Bildebergers. Cheese. You name it, they’re frightened of it and need a daddy-type to protect them from it.

roxsteadyAt the risk of getting booted, your rant reminds me of something Bob the Liberal would say. Would it be possible to see you both at the same time, or are you one in the same?I have been t-r-o-l-l-i-n-g this site for some time and I can’t help but ask… After you are done venting, do you feel better, or does it just prime you up for your next outburst? You clearly have a gift for writing but your doing nothing other than gearing yourself up for a vist to your cardiologist.

NC: I guess someone laying out facts sounds like a rant to someone who apparently gets all their information from FOX “News” Channel?(Though I wouldn’t be too concerned about admitting you’re a troll, Bob seems to have infinite patience with you lot. His awesome blog, his rules.)- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -”Nelson Montana: Killed in Vietnam by his own troops”

Facts? You mean like… [The classic example of this was the case of Jose Padilla, who was declared an "enemy combatant"] and then follow that statement up with [Padilla's case was somewhat different, since he is a U.S. citizen]?roxsteady is bouncing around this topic using olbermann soundbite hit and run tactics that make no sense and are rightly labeled rants. As for watching FNC (I do, along with millions of others) but I also enjoy (for brief periods at a time) MSNBC. In my opinion, most of the ‘news’reported after 7:00 has been over analyzed, over spun and over cooked for me to stomach. The mass media, (and I mean all of them) will take a legitimate news story and butcher it to fit whatever agenda they are pushing.

  • Bull Schmitt

Yo, Ace – saying “rightly labeled rants” doesn’t make that so, either. Maybe if you try ALL CAPS next time I’ll come around ;) The size of the audience does not make F”N”C fair, balanced, or factually correct for that matter. And you watching Joe Scarborough on MSNBC only shows that Olbermann’s network is more balanced than O’Reilly’s. Not that the talking points are any better.
