Lost Arguments

Paul Krugman:

Health care reform hangs in the balance. Its fate rests with a handful of “centrist” senators — senators who claim to be mainly worried about whether the proposed legislation is fiscally responsible.

But if they’re really concerned with fiscal responsibility, they shouldn’t be worried about what would happen if health reform passes. They should, instead, be worried about what would happen if it doesn’t pass. For America can’t get control of its budget without controlling health care costs — and this is our last, best chance to deal with these costs in a rational way.

Of course it’s not about fiscal responsibility. It’s all about contributors and lobbyists.

But let’s take the fiscal responsibility argument on its face. Who is confronting the Lieberdogs with the savings in the bill? If we argue on this basis, there is no counterpoint. The conservadem argument is all about fiscal responsibility, yet their efforts are putting fiscally responsible healthcare legislation in jeopardy.

Fact: the healthcare reform bill, along with the public option, reduces the deficit and saves money. Meanwhile, the conservadems are using a Bush-style opposite-day argument and, to date, I haven’t seen them seriously confronted about this.

If only the corporate press were as diligent about this as they are about Tiger Woods’ underpants.

No, they’re too busy trying to blame Desiree Rogers for a security breach that the Secret Service admits was their fault. If you saw Robert Gibbs’ exchange with “reporter” April Ryan you know what I’m talking about. I can’t stand this womam. I don’t know if she thinks her line of questioning and style is professional but, I can tell you it’s not. She actually had this exchange with Gibbs yesterday:April Ryan: Is there concern In this White House that she came out being someone might have called her the bell of the ball, overshadowing the first lady –Robert Gibbs: I haven’t heard that.Ryan: it’s been bantered around Washington, and Republican circles as well as Democratic Circles…Gibbs: (interrupting) April that’s not a station I live in…Ryan: (interrupting) Just answer the question, please.Gibbs: Are you done speaking so i can?Ryan: Oh, yes, I’m done.Gibbs: I have no heard any of that criticism, I have not read any of that criticism. The President, the First Lady and the entire White House staff are grateful for the job that she does. And thinks she has done a terrific and wonderful job pulling off a lot of big and important events here at the White House.I don’t like this bitch and yes, If you watched the whole exchange Gibbs at one point had to tell her to take a deep breath because she was rambling on with questions for so long he couldn’t get a word in to answer it. This woman is a disgrace. He pretty much compared her tantrum to that of his son’s and I couldn’t agree with him more. Ryan seems focused on triva. yourself. Wingers are already saying Gibbs talked down to her. I disagree. He put her tirade in it’s proper place with this final comment:”Gibbs: I’m going to get back to your topics like 98,000 men and women in Afghanistan.”Oh, take that you seriouse journalist bitch!

You mean actually expect them to ask REAL questions about REAL issues? How naive of you! That would mean they’d be professional journalists, which obviously, they’re not.

krugman is right. My wife and I are both covered under our work plans. this year they both went up 20 percent. that is on top of double digit increases in all the past years.I’m fortunate to be covered. I am not complaining about that. My company does a 75/25 cost split so they absorb 15 dollars for every 5 dollars I do.I’ve said this before. Maybe if we said “Imagine what the COMPANY could do with that extra money”. Hire another person, give the employee a raise, invest in new products, loser costs to consumers, return it to the shareholders…. all way better choices than giving it to the health care insurance companies.Health care reform will benefit businesses.

You’re right Irish Girl. What the hell was I thinking. If I want journalism, I should just watch the Daily Show like every other sane person.

Seriously. Why is hardly anyone in cable/major media confronting them about their blatant lies? Every time a Senator pulls a figure out of their ass and lies, they should be called out of order.
