A Double Epic Fail on Healthcare

Yglesias wrote a very strong piece arguing that the House Democrats are making a huge mistake in not passing the bill. Mainly, most voters don’t care about all of the different versions of the bill — all they know is Obamacare. Congress made it this far, had a bunch of votes, then stopped. Yglesias explains that the consequence of failing now is, basically, a double epic fail.

In other words, almost all of the Democrats have, at one point or another, voted for Obamacare. Their names are inextricably attached to the legislation, which, admittedly, isn’t the most popular legislation in the world right now. Yet they’re glued to Obamacare and the attacks will surely come.

If they pass the bill, they’ll at least have the positive aspects of healthcare reform to pitch at home. Big potential upside (Medicare donut hole fixed, Medicaid expansion, insurance regulations, lives saved, bankruptcies avoided, etc, etc).

But instead, they’re walking away from those positive things, with their names/votes still linked, leaving them open for attack. All of this on top of the fact that even with a 59 seat majority, they still couldn’t finish the job. No upside at all. Nothing. All the shit, and no goodies to brag about. Double epic fail.

HUGE mistake, Democrats. Pass this bill.

Greg Sargent spells it out:The choice for Dems: Either you get a thousand news articles about the new law, or a thousand news articles about how hapless and ineffective you are.saw it on Sullivan’s blog

I’ve said before that I didn’t want a democratic party that was the liberal version of the lock-step (goose-step?) repugs, but they need some discipline. The folks getting filthy rich off the backs of working people who they’ve convinced to vote republican have been very effectively manipulated by a disciplined misinformation campaign. Creating faux news to answer the purported liberal media was brilliant. Now everything not faux looks liberal and they fall over themselves to prove they aren’t.

Let’s look at the coverage following the failed underpants attack: Anyone know who the chairman of the house homeland security committee is? How about the ranking member? Yep, he was all over the tubes talking to everyone about failures. When napolitano said the response system worked it became a joke as it was repeated, out of context, ad naseum by the “liberal” press.

Now, HCR is essentially dead because the dems are as ineffective and useless as their opponents have always said. President Obama was elected with a clear mandate for them to fix this and they failed miserably. Instead of providing the bold change voters wanted, they weaseled along and now have a cold shit sandwich to eat at election time.

I keep saying I’m going to stop caring, yet I keep coming back. Maybe it’s time to stop struggling against the cold truth of this idiocracy. Maybe that’s the calm PPP was talking about yesterday.

Digby was making essentially the same point a couple of months ago.

Nope, Brutly,The calm I felt yesterday has given me rest, and I am renewed today. You can’t spend the rest of your life being angry, it takes too much energy. But sometimes, it can give you a focus you cannot achieve in any other way.

PPP, I’m glad you feel ready to continue the fight – we don’t always agree but you aren’t an unthinking talking point spouter and I respect that.

My primary reason for retiring before my O6 board met was the stress (self-induced, but real) of dealing with the inane bureaucracy was killing me. After the last few months I’ve reverted to the run down, constant indigestion state. Not sure I can take standing up for people too dense to protect themselves any more.

Brutly,I completely understand. Rest for a while. It will do you good.
