Underpants Bomber and 9/11

Cheney PR man Mike Allen tries and fails to be fair:

PUNDIT PREP 2 – The GOP is blaming Obama for the attack. But Republican lawmakers, candidates, pundits and commentators — and the Bush administration — blamed the CLINTON administration for 9/11.

There’s a trap door here. Don’t you find it a little offensive that the failed Underpants Bomber is being compared with 9/11? This not only diminishes the broad impact and trauma of 9/11, but it also elevates the ridiculous Underpants Bomber to 9/11 status. The failure to stop the Underpants Bomber is nowhere near the magnitude of Bush’s failure on to prevent 9/11.

So how about this, Mr. Allen. How about reporting that the Bush/Cheney administration had a terrible record on terrorism — 9/11, Anthrax, Beltway Snipers, countless attacks on our civilians and soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the attacks on our allies in London and Madrid? And so they have no basis for chest thumping on this issue. Report that.

absolutely bob. It’s a comparison that diminishes the impact of 9/11 and elevates the crotch bombing to more relevance than necessary.

The childish blame game is a symptom of a system wherein the two major parties have morphed into a religion.Disgusting.And we all know that all three terrorist episodes could have been prevented if any of the “intelligence” agencies would have done more than sit around and play with themselves.Just think about the info they had in each case (that we know about).

Yes, where are the 3,000 dead bodies from this latest attempt? I just read a bullshit stroy on mediaite which stated that President Obama received a written briefing 3 days before Christmas which outline some of the Homeland Security threats. The writer goes on to state that Yemen was not part of this. The bullshit piece was actually from Newsweek. Trying to compare these 2 events is pathetic. I’ve posted my response to this shit below:roxsteady says:Sorry but, unless there are 3,000 dead bodies lying around somewhere as a result of this, there is no comparison. THREE THOUSAND DEAD BODIES TO ZERO! Also, what no one seems to be talking about is the fact that whatever the 911 commission instituted, it wasn’t sufficient. Perhaps the next time the politico is taking stenography from Dick Cheney, they could ask him if what they put in place really kept us safe? By the way, the answer is NO!

I’ll share a little story that the late Molly Ivins told at a speech she gave several years ago, obviously. She told us how she was talking to former President Clinton (now there is a name drop, hey) and he talked about the day that W. was inaugurated. It is customary for the outgoing and incoming president to meet for about an hour or so and Clinton told Molly that he told W. that there are 4 things he’ll have to deal with in his presidency. One of them was this guy named “Osama bin Laden”. Bush scoffed at him and then said something about how Iraq was going to be one of his biggest problems. Unbelievable, this is just one more piece of evidence that they were looking for any reason to go after Saddam and finish his daddy’s war, 9-11 gave them that excuse. Bastards. Someone should go to jail.

I don’t think trying to elevate the underpants bomber to 9/11 status will work with anyone but permanent residents of Wingnutsylvania. All you really have to say to anyone making that comparison is “Really? The failed underpants bomber? Really?”

The childish blame game is a symptom of a system…The childish one is, yes. But a huge part of the problem with BushCo was that every time something went wrong they said they “wouldn’t play the blame game”. When legitimate questions were asked, they were called The Blame Game. Congressional investigations? “Not gonna play The Blame Game”. Consequently, no one was ever held accountable for anything. Rather than being fired, Tenet got the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Condoleezza Rice got promoted from National Security Advisor to Secretary of State! Michael Brown didn’t resign from FEMA because of incompetence – he left due to negative publicity which was impeding his work in the relief effort! The GOP was able to successfully frame all questions about the monumental fuck-ups during BushCo as unreasonable finger pointing. They attacked those who, like Paul O’Neill, were critical and rewarded those who should have been punished. They made it okay for people to avoid responsibility for their actions. And this has manifested itself dramatically in the whole financial fiasco – executives still making outrageous salaries & people still getting huge bonuses. The blame game isn’t a game – it should be an important part of how our government runs. Unfortunately, the GOP is 9 years too late in finding their consciences and they still aren’t owning up to their parts in the debacle that was the Bush Administration.

Turns out Obama was warned about this:http://eclectablog.blogspot.com/2009/12/pres-daily-brief-bin-laden-determ-to.html“Presidential Daily Brief: Bin Laden Determined to strike US with underwear”Heh, heh…

May I take this moment to express my heartfelt opinion that Mike Aleen is an unforgivable douchebag?Thank you all for indulging me.

  • Hielo

Ceu-Your opinion is always welcome, but I have to ask this: What is accomplished by blaming the other party? The GOP sucks. I totally agree. But they all take their bribes and marching orders from lobbyists.I am not trying to downplay the conduct from Bushco. It was beyond bad. I just think the political parties are detrimental when we need to tackle the enormous mess that Bush/Cheney left us.Defining the problem is not going to work.

  • Hielo

Eclectablog- Just checked out your link. Now, THAT is funny!

  • ceu

Hielo – the whole point was that when mistakes are made, rather than actually holding people accountable, the argument is “what’s the point of blaming the other party?”. Exactly the argument you make now. What we have now is a free-for-all, regardless of party, where people in high places can do whatever they damn well please, destroying societies, economies, and LIVES without free of punishment because punishment would be political!!Defining the problem is a start. Ignoring it makes it acceptable.

  • Hielo

“Defining the problem is a start. Ignoring it makes it acceptable.”O.K. So how does defining or ignoring differ if there is no mention of a “solution”?

  • Rogect8

I dunno what you’re talking about, Bob. Other than the lack of a memo warning Obama of the upcoming attack, the fact that nobody died, the fact that the flight originated outside of the U.S. and was therefore not subject to security measures within America’s control, the fact that the attack was unsuccessful, and the fact that this plan involved only 1 inept whackjob who tried to take down a single plane using low-grade explosives and his nutsack as opposed to a carefully orchestrated attack that took 10 years and $500,000 to carry out…..the two events are exactly the same.
