Demon Pass, Part 2

Josh Marshall reports:

How many times did the Republicans use it the last time they controlled Congress, 2005-06? More than 35 times! And the Democrats? They complained about it then too, though to the best of my knowledge there were no claims of treason.

The Republicans have no shame. No dignity.

Maybe it’s me, but complaining about something and then later doing it yourself is somewhat lower on the hypocrisy scale than doing it first and complaining about it later. It’s not any less childish, mind you, to say to one’s opponent, “Fine, you did this, we’ll do it too,” but it is less hypocritical than doing it and then telling someone else, “You can’t do this!”

May be guilty of a false equivalency here, but here goes:the repubs remind me that prior to the iraqi war how they iraqi’s would say things like. You cannot attack during rammadan, or you cannot attack a mosque or things like that… and then you read that the warring sects would attack each other during rammadan or attack each other’s mosques. If the repubs are attacking you for doing something, there is a very good chance that what you are doing, they have done. If they are accusing of treason, then it is a certainty that they have done it.

Hey Bob,I wrote a piece on this today. From 1995 until 2007, Republicans used it 192 times. Sort of makes their use of Reconciliation look feeble, huh?Anyway, I think there is more to this deem and Pass, this time around, than meets the eye. It’s possible that this method was approached specifically to piss Republicans off. Sort of like, “Hey! Look over there!”So long as Republicans are whining about procedures, Democrats are the only ones talking about what’s actually in the bill; which makes this a win.The real question is, was anyone in Washington smart enough to figure that out ahead of time? It’s been an amazing two days. We now actually have Republicans screaming for an up-or-down vote on the bill, which was anathema to them last week. Since most Americans don’t differentiate between votes in the House and votes in the Senate, it makes no difference that they still don’t want an up-or-down vote in the Senate. So long as they scream “HCR deserves an up-or-down vote!”, that’s what Americans will hear…which is exactly what Obama has been saying for weeks.Presto!! Republicans agree with President Obama that HCR deserves an up-or-down vote! Now…how the hell did that happen?

@PPP I agree, that was the first thing that occurred to me too. Pelosi pulled this “deem and pass” out of her hat in order to get the Repubs to start chasing it instead of going on and on about the actual bill (or at least the lies that Repubs have been telling about the bill). And it worked like a charm.@mattpd There is an old cliche, at least I think it is a cliche…”Liars always think everyone else is lying and cheaters always think everyone else is cheating.” Same thing with hypocrits.
