The IRS Will Not Be Invading Your House

Again, under the current law, the IRS will not be penalizing you in any way for not paying the “I Don’t Want Insurance” tax. Here’s my WalletPop column about the mandates.

Via Oliver Willis, here’s IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman talking with Representative Ron Kind in the House Ways & Means committee:

Of course, if too many people try to stick it to the man, they’ll probably change the law and begin to enforce payment of the tax.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see this implemented much the same way as they enforce it here in Massachusetts. On the MA state income tax form, the amount of the penalty for not being ensured is listed as an exemption you claim if you have proof of insurance. That proof is a document sent to you by your insurance provider. So, if you cheat the system on this it’s handled just like any other tax violation.

I just saw George Will on This Week saying the Obama admin was going to have the IRS hire 16,000 IRS storm troopers to come hunt down offenders. Peggy Noonan was happy to sit there and nod like the imbecile she is.
