They. Don’t. Bargain.

Greg Sargent:

If press reports are to be believed, the White House is hoping that if it decides to try the 9/11 plotters in a military tribunal, it will secure some GOP support for closing Guantanamo and bringing some terror suspects onto U.S. soil.

But leading Republicans have a two word answer: No deal.

I really wish the White House would get real. The Republicans will not go along with anything it does. Say nothing of the fact that the White House is considering moving the KSM trial back to a military tribunal. Holy hell. Just take a stand and stick with it. People dig that more than constantly fishing for approval. Sheesh.

I hoping that if this is what the Whitehouse is considering, that the reaction to it makes the President think twice about wasting his time with Republicans. This would be a disgrace.

I agree with Bob and Roxsteady. This is the administration taking a ridiculous risk.

The President has been used to being “The Great Facilitator” through out his entire career and with much success. But I’m willing to bet that in every previous situation, both sides were looking for common ground. What the White House seemingly fails to understand is that the GOP will do anything – ANYTHING – to cause an administration failure because they don’t care about anything else but winning, American people be damned. And for a person like President Obama, he still believes that decency and a caring for the citizens of the country will outweigh partisanship. But not with this particular generation of the Republican Party. Add to that the Teabaggers and the GOP’s willingness to exploit that base and an attempt to bring them into the fold, and you have an obstructionist party like no other. I hope the White House realizes that before compromising on yet another issue.Using the Federal Court System the right thing to do and it’s also successful and has been used in over 300 terrorism trials by the previous administration, which has been conveniently forgotten by the opposition party. Not only would this be a political loss for the Obama administration but more importantly, a tragic loss for the rule of law.

I can’t possibly believe that Obama is this naive. I have to wonder if he’s hoping to just use it as more ammunition against the Reeps. How much ammo does he need to say “I tried, they didn’t want to cooperate,” though?

  • Allonfla

Yeah, I can’t support him on this.

The Administration is trying, I believe, to show the American people how obstructive the Republicans are by acceding to (almost) every request/demand, only to get slapped down again and again. The Administration hopes that the American people will come to realize that NOTHING will work with the GOP. Sadly, most Americans have been dumbed down to the point where this kind of subtlety will not work.

Beg pardon, I meant most Americans of the Republican and Tea Party persuasions have been dumbed down to the point where this kind of subtlety will not work. I apologize.

I agree that he should just stick to one strategy because the GOP will NEVER say Yes.But on the other hand he is being provided with a lot of campaign fodder.

Interesting point JM.I don’t understand why Obama keeps trying to reach across the aisle. They’ve said NO every time. So frustrating!

You guys are all ignoring the fact that many chickenshit dems are complicit in this. There is no way to “win” this battle. More feckless dems handing the thugs a win.

Also note that, unlike Bush, the President is not “ordering” DoJ to do anything.

If press reports are to be believed

Yeah, the corporate media is spot on.
