Michael Steele Confirms GOP Southern Strategy

We all know this, but Michael Steele — chairman of the Republican Party — confirmed that the Republicans have employed race-baiting as a means of winning elections:

“For the last 40-plus years we had a ‘Southern Strategy’ that alienated many minority voters by focusing on the white male vote in the South.”

And there you go. By the way, they’re still doing it. The entire tea party recruitment effort is built around racial dog whistles: tax cut are good except when they go to lazy blacks, immigrants come here to deliberately get into car crashes, community organizing, etc.

As an African American it amuses me whenever people on the tv machine ask why we don’t join the teabaggers. Naturally, it’s because we’re not stupid. We understand that we’ve received tax cuts. We understand that big government wasn’t a problem for these people until the Negro arrived in office. We didn’t see any protest when Bush was fisting us all. And finally, we recognize the racism that is prevalent in this bullshit movement.

By the way, we also appreciate that the majority of White people in this country didn’t join them either. Like us, they recognize compost when they see it. Thanks to all of you!

honestly, i’m really damn surprised he admitted that. He is this nonstop-mistake-churning-machine, and i’m surprised he hasn’t been booted off.

I live in the South, Mississippi to be exact, and I work and go to school in Memphis. Let me tell you that the entire Republican strategy is not just preying on people’s racial prejudices, but feeding them and making these prejudices worse, or cultivating prejudice in someone who had none prior to Republican influence.

I hope Steele is not just now learning this.I’ll be shocked if there aren’t more calls for his resignation by the end of today.

I cannot imagine that as an AA man and as a politician that this is news to Steele.I am so grateful that he said this. There are millions of Americans who have never heard of the Southern Strategy. More will now know about it.I want everyone to know that the republicans will use race and anything else they can to divide the American people. The repubs just love the Pledge of Allegiance. They want it recited everywhere all the time. But they don’t believe a word of it.I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, ONE NATION under God, INDIVISIBLE, with liberty and justice for ALL.

So called “independents” have NO excuse anymore. If they want to elect Republicans, they can thank themselves for helping to elect racist, anti-American bigots, period. Oh, yeah, and they’re on the side of the big banks and insurance companies who want to profit from your misery.

“With liberty and justice for all”. I don’t think that part is included here in Arizona.

The two biggest one day events in the south were changing the 5′ broad gauge railroads to standard gauge and the other is the mad rush of the peckerwood faction to the GOP when Lyndon signed the Civil Rights Bill. Maybe they think the party of Lincoln gives them some strange twisted notion they won the war they started.
