Lieberman, Nelson and Lincoln, and so on, these Dems are like double agents pulling the party-internal conversation toward far right neocon ideas (like torture!! and stripping citizenship, etc).We should be pushing politicians like this out of the party, no?Problem is, the media would just eat this up! I can hear them firing up the false equivalencies now, ‘See: the Dem’s are just as bad when it comes to enforcing party purity and shutting out opposing ideas..’

That’s a good question, Dan. And one we Nebraskan Democrats struggle with constantly, viz FredFlintstoneHead. When I attend our quarterly Nebraska Democratic Party Central Committee meetings, the dialogue usually goes this way:”Fucking Ben Nelson.”"Yeah. Seriously.”"Democrat? Democrat?!”"I know, right??”Quiet fuming.”Meh. What are you gonna do?”The cruel truth in Nelson’s case is that no more liberal Democrat can get elected in Nebraska. He has to pander to the Family Values crew to stay afloat and bring in his money; anything to his Left won’t play in Nebraska, period. So he’s in the uncomfortable position of being hated by both the Left and the Right in this state, and we take some small solace in knowing that he’s roundly loathed in a bi-partisan way.Other DINOs may face stronger challengers from their Left flank in states that aren’t so oddly purple as Nebraska (the vast plains west of Omaha are all solidly Red and veering into Teabagger Territory; Omaha itself, however, sent one Electoral Vote in for Obama in 2008). The difference in our case, with DINOs we’d like to see purged and primaried, is that Democrats tend not to unify down strictly ideological lines. We’re not that organized, we’re not that homogenous. So on our side it isn’t this massive Party Apparatus demanding ideological line-toeing and cynically leveraging a whackadoo grassroots movement like the Teabaggers to force Party Purity among moderates in Congress.Some semblance of lockstep and Party unity would be great in the Democratic Congress, but it just isn’t in our nature. We don’t hold Purity tests and demand strict adherence to Values Votes the way the other side does, which is why we’re seeing so many more purges and primary assaults from the Right.
