Promises, Promises

Jon Stewart takes us through the history of clean energy pledges from the last eight presidents.

But you know, if there had been enough public support for these changes — if we had been willing to give up or scale back some conveniences in the near term in order to satisfy long term energy independence and climate-friendly sources, it would have been done.

I just watched “moment of zen.” After the 1951 Halliburton Oil ad, the “moment” moved ahead to Pres. Ford as he held up a copy of the plan The White House? proposed for Congress to act on. He tore off a page for every month that they did nothing. Nothing has changed. Cars are slightly better at gas mileage – or it’s just that there are more small cars. There is more plastic than ever. Miles and miles of aisles upon aisles of plastic containers. And, then, we can breathe in the poisons they give off.Nevermind.

If people were repeatedly and doggedly told the truth, many would get motivated. Maybe we would get that hundredth monkey, that tipping point of information saturation that would turn the tide of public opinion. No one in the MSM is telling people the truth about peak oil and the irreplaceablity of liquid petrol. The religion of the infinite growth economy precludes its recognition.BTW, where is Jon Stewart’s bit on Obama’s reversal on Habeas Corpus et al? I was hoping to see you cope with that bit of well warranted criticism coming from a trust worthy source.

“repeatedly and doggedly told the truth”They have heard this over and over for more than 100 years…They can’t listen because it is goes against their “religion”, i.e. America is the greatest country. Capitalism is the greatest system. Freedom!!!!!The people telling the truth, the prophets of this country have been imprisoned, executed and pilloried.

@Charles,You are correct, or course. My hundredth monkey comment speaks to the idea getting just enough people on board with a new idea to shift the overall paradigm. Most people will not convinced and they are a lost cause. But those who can be convinced can make plans and possibly weather the storm with some dignity.
