The Oil Could Spread all Over the Atlantic

Oh good.

BOULDER—A detailed computer modeling study released today indicates that oil from the massive spill in the Gulf of Mexico might soon extend along thousands of miles of the Atlantic coast and open ocean as early as this summer. The modeling results are captured in a series of dramatic animations produced by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and collaborators.

For some reason, the animated visualization of the spill reminds me of a Gerald Scarfe animation from The Wall:

Not to get all Wizard of Oz on this, but try playing the following Pink Floyd clip at the same time as the oil spill clip.

I don’t think that’s really possible. I mean, I’ve read the Bible, and I don’t remember reading anything about what you call “currents”.

Damn… once it rounds the tip of Florida, Oilzilla moves scary fast in that clip. At least some of the eastern seaboard is spared in this scenario. The Atlantic gyre current is going to swirl with this crap for a long time. Ironic that some of the BP spill in the Gulf will end up on Britain’s shores. You mentioned in another post that BP was speculating on slurping $1.5 million worth of oil a day if the gusher cap succeeds. Any means by which the Feds can confiscate that and use it to offset damages? How about investing it in clean up technology? Rachel Maddow’s coverage has shown how pathetic, low tech, ineffective, and ill-funded the mitigation “effort” is to date.
