Holy Crap

The (sponsored by Goldline) promo for the Glenn Beck lawn concert.

And a crowd of white people will rise to these standards by sitting in lawn chairs and watching Glenn Beck “ad-lib” for three hours about shit he ripped off from Cleon Skousen and Joe McCarthy. Believe!

Have you seen Beck’s new banner?

  • Allen Frederick

Nice quote from Matt Taibbi today:”There’s nothing in the world more tired than a progressive blogger like me flipping out over the latest idiocies emanating from the Fox News crowd.”Well said sir. Well said.

  • BenR

“they believe that America is mankind’s last great hope…something many of us have forgotten”Yep, it’s that tremendous humility that makes the whole world long to come lick America’s feet. It’s why the US is so universally loved and respected and embraced by every nation and faith in the world.I’m just curious as to what Mr Beck believes that hope is for?A glorious market economy where unchecked greed can lead the world into a GFC?A glorious tolerance that equates community centres with jihad training centres?A low-regulation culture that “decorates” the environment with “yummy mousse”?A justice-loving society that can arrest you for being hispanic in public?Hmmm…yep, we want Glenn Beck to fulfill his mission to “restore America…restore the world.”

  • brian desjardins

Ben you should get out more. If you had been to the third world, and seen real human suffering-I mean real suffering, not just listening to Glenn Beck-you might have a different outlook on America. Maybe you have, and you are just that twisted. America is a great place. Albeit flawed, but still better than anywhere else. I know, I’ve been everywhere. And where in the world is a society more tolerant to muslims (other than, of course, other muslim countries)? Do you think they preach tolerance in Iran? What kind of opportunities are available to women in Saudi Arabia? Do you think America has more mosques than Iran has synagougues? Ever had to deal with the police in Mexico? Do you know that in Singapore you can be arrested for kissing a woman in public? Do you know that in Japan, there are many places you cannot dine or socialize if you are white? Tolerance, please. You know nothing of it, and certainly do not practice it towards those whom you disagree with.Yummy mousse? Ever drive, take a cab, the bus, a plane? Than you share the guilt. And where are people being arrested for being hispanic? Where? Can you site one example? If you have read the Arizona law, you know that claim is fiction. You sir, are out to lunch. Have a great day, and please, don’t forget to take your medication.

  • Mather Z

Brian, when your standards have slipped so low that all you can do is favorably compare the US to the tolerance of Iran, the justice system of Mexico, the civil liberties of Singapore, the status of women in Saudi Arabia – that’s when you know you’ve lost it. Bravo, America! You’re not the worst! How about trying to be the best, Brian? How about holding ourselves to a higher standard? Did you even WATCH the clip?Seriously, though. You’re applying the “tu quoque” fallacy to other countries, and it doesn’t hold up any better than when you do it to people. Why does Iran’s intolerance mean that it’s OK for Americans to attack fellow citizens who believe in Islam? What’s more, the comparison of US mosques vs. Iran’s synagogues is idiotic. What are the demographics of Iran compared to the US? What’s its population? How many Jews are in Iran vs. Muslims in the US? Of COURSE there are more mosques here, dummy. Because America is supposed to be a welcoming place for everyone – it’s even in the Beck clip! – and Iran has never pretended to be.So OK, yeah, Brian. I’ll concede the point. We’re better than Iran. How does that make it all right for Americans to exhibit such hatred and prejudice towards other people, even other Americans? How does that make it all right for the American government to allow corporations to regulate themselves, leading to environmental disasters and global financial catastrophe?

  • Mather Z

Oh, and speaking of Goldline, this is worth reading (Bob, you’ll like it):http://tinyurl.com/2766om7

  • Alan Fors

I haven’t commented for a while, but I have been reading. Where did this new douche come from?Mr. Desjardin, sir, just because much of the third world that you have visited might suck (in your white-ass opinion) doesn’t mean that the USA should emulate that suckieness. We may be more tolerant of Islam than many other countries, but last weeks silliness about the not-a-mosque that’s not-at-ground-zero shows we have improvements to make on that tollerance – despite how comparatively good you may think we are.Do you think that gender inequities in Suadi Arabia justify even the smallest inequities here? Or that very corrupt police in Mexico justify just kind-of-a-little-bit corrupt police here? No, we should be the best we can be, despite how shitty the rest of the world is. Being just marginally better does us no good.

Give it a rest DesjardinsThis Jingoistic America #1 crap makes me want to fucking vomit. And I am sick to death of the western-europe bashing by pundits. What exactly is wrong with Europe? Last I checked, not a lot. In fact, Germany’s economy is booming.Saying we’re oh-so-great just because the lowest bitter of 3rd would countries are much worse is so disingenuine. And here you are, Desjardins, comparing us to dictatorships, royal kingdoms, and the spooky Iranians. Why dont you compare American to other democractic nations. If you do that, you might not be as full of yourself. And you know what else? You do not have to see yourself as number 1 to still enjoy the fruits of your country and to have national pride. America is absolutely better than many countrys on the planet, but number 1? Drop the superficial patriotism and try some real patriotism. We have shitty healthcare, shitty education, shitty food safety laws, shitty labor laws, shitty safety nets. But we’re #1 !! American FUCK YEAH!!If you want to show true patriotism, dedicate yourself to improving those things mentioned above. Or shut up.

  • Mather Z

I should have posted the original link here:http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2010/07/glenn-beck-goldline/

  • brian desjardins

Hey Alan, my patriotism is not superficial. I served my country for fifteen years in the US Navy. I seriously doubt you are qualified to debate my patriotism. Take it for granted, I love my country and think this is the best place on earth to pursue happiness. If you don’t think so, you should seek your happiness elsewhere. My point was not to compare the US to third world countries, but to simply state it is not as bad you and your friends on the left make it seem to be. Having seen what I have seen, and having experienced what i have experienced, gives me a profound appreciation for the quality of life we enjoy in America. That is not contrived. So stuff it.

  • brian desjardins

My white-ass opinion. Wow, three cheers for tolerance!!!!!!

  • Alan Fors

@desjardins:Fuck You.USN, CVN-62, 75-81Don’t trot out your service as proof of superiority until you know what you’re talking about. Not debating your patiotism, just your bullshitism.

  • brian desjardins

Great talking with you Alan. You should curse more.

  • Alan Fors

Great talking with you Alan. You should curse more.

Maybe you should think more. What, no attacks on my patriotism now? Can’t handle the language? I’m begining to doubt you were in the Navy then.

  • caribbeanobserver

Speaking as some-one who is very much in tune with the 3rd world, I suspect that somewhere along the line there is a stereotypical 3rd world being bandied about (all 3rd world is not Haiti)!. Quite a few so-called third world countries, even though they may not have as many options and variety as 1st world, enjoy a life that is less harsh, fulfilled by family ties, extended and otherwise, friendships and a camraderie that doesn’t exist in 1st worlders, who often are viewed as uptight and intense. Sure America is a great place, but the quality of life is way harsher in terms of lifestyle than many third world countries that I have visited. Make no mistake, 3rd worlders have everything that America has, with updated technology, cable tv, direct tv, and all that is taking place in America live and direct in their 3rd world living rooms.Another thing, why does America have to be better than or the best at??! Actually, part of any countries evaluation is based on the people and their inter-actions, and right about now the lack of tolerance and attitudes being displayed daily is sadly scraping the bottom of any ranking scale!

  • brian desjardins

I never attacked your patriotism, shipmate. I just do not agree with you.Go ahead and doubt my service. I have nothing to prove to you or anyone else.Sincerely though, thank you for your contribution to this nation’s defense.I certainly can handle foul language, but I find it impolite when having a conversation with decent people, so I refrain as much as possible.

  • brian desjardins

Observer, I think you are absolutely right. My point is, we take a lot for granted. If we appreciated the good that we have, like folks in other countries, we would be much happier. For all that is wrong in America, so much more is right. We have much to be happy for. Note to those who are about to tell me how naive, stupid, or “white-ass” my opinion is: I am not saying America is perfect. It is not, obviously. But I think we are lot closer to “perfect” than some of my friends on this website give credit for.

  • Alan Fors

You don’t agree that America should be the most tolerant of nations? You don’t agree that our Constitution guarentees everyone – regardless of race or religion – the right to happiness? You don’t agree that a shrill, harpy, hatemonger such as Glenn Beck should be allowed to display his digusting opinons as if they represented our great country without a vocal oppostition?I don’t know what you served our country for, but those are not the values I signed up to defend.

  • Olivia

Glenn Beck is not Martin Luther King Jr.http://glennbeckisnotmartinlutherkingjr.com/

  • alopecia

@brian desjardins: Thank you for your service. Yes, you’re a patriot. So are the rest of us here. However, we seem to be a different kind of patriot than you seem to be. You look at the US and see the best nation on Earth. We look at the US and see that we as a nation fall well short of our own admirable principles. Who is right? I’d argue we both are, and from your 9:58 comment to caribbeanobserver above, I’m guessing you kinda think so, too.Disagree with us as much as you like. I can’t speak for everyone, but I doubt too many people here mind—certainly I don’t. Just please don’t be disagreeable. It’s a waste of everyone’s time.

  • MrBrink

“bullshitism.”Hee-hee.I don’t believe dude understands the gross irrelevancy of his my-patriotism-is-bigger-than-yours postings. It’s tantamount to: Stop complaining about oil spills and industrial waste, you’re not innocent.Newsflash: Driving and riding public transportation isn’t a crime. 100 million gallons of crude in the Gulf was the direct result of criminal negligence. He’s disparaging the helpless to give deference to criminal deeds. Way to go!stop complaining about unchecked corporate greedNewsflash: It was this greed that brought the global financial system to its knees and it was this system that leads to incidents like 25 dead coal miners in W. Virgina.Stop saying we’re intolerant and we arrest people for being MexicanNewsflash: There are at least 30-40 million off-to-glory-faced Evangelicals voting in this country, many in elected office and the War Department(s), who hate gays, Muslims, immigrants, blacks, liberals, women’s rights, poor people who vote their interests, and self-assuredly, and confidently, asked for ONE incident where someone has been falsely detained, cuffed, and held for not having his papers– based on Arizona’s racist law. Here ya go.I don’t believe brian fully understands the scope and seriousness of our “imperfections.”

  • BenR

Hi BrianWhere are there countries more tolerant to Muslims? Just most other first-world countries. Your view that it is America vs Muslim countries or vs third-world countries is a good case in point of that great humility I alluded to.I live in Australia. I love it here. We have great health-care, education, freedom and an economy that managed to surf the crap wave of the GFC better than virtually any other first-world country. We have soldiers dying in Afghanistan and peace-keeping in several other spots as well. We also have plenty of flaws like any country – have to deal with corruption and incompetence from our elected officials, battle a me-first culture, fight to get people to care about justice and the environment, have cared poorly for our indigenous people etc etc. What we don’t do is tell the world how much better than it we are…ever. How did you, sir, find Australia? Seeing as you’ve been everywhere…And I don’t think looking just at my mocking of Glenn Beck and his followers gives you any insight into my levels of tolerance. Or medication. However, I’m glad that no one has ever been arrested for being hispanic in a public place. You’ve rendered all my points meaningless. But I do not share the guilt for the non-regulation of a deep-sea oil platform. That lies with the regulators.

  • staci

Hey, as a black woman, can I claim the Lincoln Memorial to be hallowed ground and say that my sensitivity has been offended because Glenn Beck will be standing only two flights down from where Martin Luther King spoke? Just wondering.

  • http://tarackian.deviantart.com J M Ashby

Sorry Staci, that right is reserved for real ‘merikans only. Besides, Glenn Beck is just like MLK, didnt you hear? Gold Line says so!

  • David Robinson

OK, I’m just curious as to how much that proverbial bullshit cost dear old Glen? That man need’s to get laid.

  • ec

Allen, you are no better than Fox in your cutting and pasting of convenient quotes.Taibbi went on to explain why he was in fact criticizing Fox and even called for a boycott of the stations advertisers to the extent that one seemingly random one should be driven out of business for supporting a station that suggests that Obama wants to kill white babies.Shut up Allen. You are stupid to believe that we don’t actually read material from other sources.

  • Ref

Love your idea, Staci!I guess I shouldn’t hold my breath for the day when either the responsible journalists or the Villager talking-heads in our mass media just give up and say (of Beck and the other shouters)”These people are loons and their followers are suckers!”

  • http://kcdad.livejournal.com Charles Brown

“And where in the world is a society more tolerant to muslims”You mean, of course, outside of the Tea Party / Neopublican / Fox News world?America (to Americans) is what America is DESPITE conservatives, not because of them. It is (to foreigners) what it is mostly due to our imperial economic system.

  • http://kcdad.livejournal.com Charles Brown

“I love my country and think this is the best place on earth to pursue happiness.”Good for you… maybe you should have gotten off your ship once in awhile and seen something other than the bars and brothels outside the bases you docked at.People all over the world think their country is the best… it is called patriotism, nationalism, ethnocentrism.
