Attention Oldster Tea Party People

The Republicans are threatening to shut down the government if they manage to take back Congress in the November election. Hooray! It’s the 1990s all over again, but this time in the middle of a slow-growth jobless economy. Really smart, Republicans.

Oh, and all of those older tea party members who can’t wait for the Republicans to take over? They’re totally screwed.

The first, and most immediate effect of a shutdown is furloughs — hundreds of thousands of workers sent home without pay. That has ripple effects across the country.

Shalala ran down the list of functions that would be stopped.

“Social Security checks, Medicare reimbursements…welfare checks to the state, Medicaid checks to the state.”

If the government shuts down, the Republicans will have created hundreds of thousands of newly unemployed people.

And, more importantly for the old tea partiers, no Social Security and no Medicare payments for you. But at least they were able to stop that evil black guy in the White House. That’s got to be worth the price of a few Social Security checks, no? Who needs to pay the rent or buy food anyway? Loud noises and all that.

Vote wisely, old people.

Democrats are going to have to be blunt and keep saying NO SS CHECKS AND NO MEDICARE.Otherwise I don’t think the message will get through. How many people receiving Medicare screamed about health care, not realizing that they themselves were getting what they were screaming about? My husband and I will plan appropriately for the future. If more people save money and don’t buy against that time, they will ruin the Christmas economy.

I’m actually a bit surprised that the GOP is being so bold in stating their desire to force a govt shutdown in 2010.Shutting down the federal govt is a pretty stupid idea at any time, but doing so during the worst recession since the 1930s is beyond irresponsible. It’s insanity.

Not just newly unemployed, Bob. There are many people who could be made homeless without social security. The disabled and the elderly. Not that the Republicans care.

Well they wanted a revolution, this would be a good way to accomplish that goal.

Great post, Bob. We need to hammer this home as frequently as possible.

I’m really scared now. I’d better just vote for all the Democrats or my mother’s Medicare and Social Security will be cut off. That’s what this post says, right? “No Social Security and no Medicare payments for you.” I’m so scared I wish I could just vote for Democrats every day of the year. That’s clearly the only way to abate my fear, which is rising every day thanks to the honest filtering of news by bobcesca.com.Fear Fear Scary Scary! Scary Fear!

Allen Frederick,Actually, Bob Cesca is only reporting what the Republicans are saying they are going to do. If you agree with this Republican agenda, there is no need to to be scared, right? Shutting down the govt. is no big deal, right?
