Republicans Attempting to Brand 9/11

I’m not sure how 9/11 became a Republican occasion, but I can think of about a thousand other occasions I’d rather be associated with than the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil ever. Nevertheless, the Republican fetish for 9/11 is now becoming an all out effort to brand it as a for-profit endeavor.

ThinkProgress has the rundown:

– This weekend, Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck are hosting a rally in Anchorage, Alaska to mark the anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Ticket prices range from $73.75 per person (including taxes and fees) to a high of $225. As the Hill newspaper reports, “there was no indication as to whom or what the proceeds will go.”

– Disgraced lobbyist Ralph Reed is using his consulting firm Century Strategies to host a “Faith and Freedom Conference and Strategy Briefing” with an assortment of conservatives, including Brent Bozell, Tony Perkins, Rich Lowry, Tucker Carlson, Grover Norquist, Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-VA), Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA), Erick Erickson, and others. The event is on September 10th-11th, and costs $95 for early registration.

– Newt Gingrich is using the September 11th anniversary to unveil a new movie called “America At Risk,” which Gingrich says will drive the “national dialogue” about President Obama’s failure to address the rise of “Radical Islam” and its attempt to impose Sharia law on the United States. Gingrich’s website notes that the public can “pre-order your copy now for just $19.95 plus $4 shipping.”

These people ought to be ashamed on themselves. Unless the proceeds are going to the families of the victims (who Glenn Beck hates), I can’t think of anything more gratuitous and shameless — other than, perhaps, a “genuine slivers of Ground Zero” mail order business.

“Newt Gingrich is using the September 11th anniversary to unveil a new movie called “America At Risk” about President Obama’s failure to address the rise of “Radical Islam”.Think about that for a second. A movie usually takes about a year to make, especially a thoroughly researched documentary. That means the movie was likely started around September of 2009, only nine months into the Obama Administration. Not only has the US not been attacked under Obama, the US WAS attacked in the first nine months of Bush. Bush also received many warnings. Yet Gingrich thinks he can create a documentary about Obama not dealing with radical Islam? That takes some balls. Gingrich is as dumb as a rock, but that won’t stop him from his desperate and ham-handed attempted to take back the Republican spotlight.

Did hell freeze over?Am I in the Twilight Zone?I actually agree with you, Allen.grins.

I agree with you too, Allen. Wow.The daughter of an acquaintance of mine is an intern for Newt. She tells her mom that Newt is absolutely certain that he will be the Republican candidate in 2012. Everyone is very excited, blah, blah, blah.

If that SUV bomb in Times Square had gone off, I think we’d be living in a different America right now.Ineptitude has helped to keep the wingnut hounds at bay.”Keep us safe Sarah, Glenn, and Newt!”"We’ll never doubt you again!”I weep for America’s fragile sense of security.

  • EGB

So, wait, Newt has a new movie coming out (straight to DVD…) all about the evils of Islam? Wasn’t Newt one of the first idiots to say, repeated by no new thoughts Palin, that the “Ground Zero Mosque” was a new attack by Islam? Hmmm, call me crazy but is it possible that all of this August batshit nonsense has just been a marketing campaign???

Destroying Honor is more like it.I’m officially a wingnutophobe, they’re now trying to stir up the “mosloms” to attack us.They want another terr’ist attack so bad they can taste it. I wouldn’t put in past any of them to actually set one up themselves.

Slightly related – I’ve noticed a trend to give 9/11 a different label too: Patriot Day. It seems to be a way stores and brands can capitalize on the day without stirring the uncomfortable images of the burning towers. “Stock up on Budwiser for your Patriot Day BBQ”, “Get all your Patriot Day cards at Hallmark”, etc. The commercialization is horrible, but perhaps inevitable, but there’s another objection I have: there already is a Patriots’ Day.April 19th, 1775. Lexington, Concord, Paul Revere, Redcoats, and all that. It’s a day truly worth celebrating, and is observed as a holiday here in Mass (though we “observe” on the 3rd Monday in April). If 9/11 really needs a commercial label, find a different one. The events of 9/11 did stir patriotism, but they were not patriotic events, so I find the label incorrect in addition to it already being used.

“That means the movie was likely started around September of 2009, only nine months into the Obama Administration.”These right-wingers really give new meaning to the phrase “We hold these truths to be self-evident…”Reality doesn’t matter; only self-evident perception matters. The April 2009 tax protests were the perfect example. No one’s taxes had been raised, in fact most had been cut (slightly), yet thousands took to the streets to protest a massive tax increase. Why? Because Obama is a Democrat, Democrats raise taxes, therefore Obama raised taxes.Same with the “spending” bullshit. The government is not, in reality, spending substantially more than it was spending 3 years ago. And it’s not “out of control,” it’s very much in control. Yet again, Democrats are in office, Democrats are big government spenders, therefore there is out-of-control big government spending taking place. So much of what I’ve heard the RW/TP/GOP/FNC say about the President and the Democrats comes straight from the script they’ve been reading for 40 years, that they don’t even need to bother themselves with looking at reality. They know what Democrats are doing, thinking, saying and proposing no matter what actual Democrats actually do, actually think, actually say, and actually propose.”We hold these truths to be self-evident…”

Don’t forget “Guliani’s 9/11″ showing on cable now. Not sure that’s the correct name, but it sounds about right for that tool to claim it himself.Who could stand listening to the lisper narrate a complete documentary. Not I!!

I think this is an issue we should hit hard at. I want to see t-shirts, bumper stickers, protests, Dems and activists on TV, the whole nine-yards of push back against the idea of profiting and commercializing 9/11.What pithy slogans would you use? Here’s some of my ideas…..

    • 9/11 is a not a profit center
    • Say NO to 9/11 profiteering
    • 9/11 was a tragedy, not a cash cow
  • Irish Girl

I’ve already created a bumper sticker…..it costs about $2.99 to order (don’t know about shipping), should I buy it? Anyone else want one? You can see the bumper sticker here: http://drangedinaz.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/bumper.jpg

Well hell has frozen over. Allen has said something that most of us agree with. Excuse me while I get ready for my 9/11 barbecue. I am making 2 long skewers of beef squares which will be placed vertically in a bed of potato salad. I will be using red peppers placed in key spots, to stand in for all the blood and carnage. Any ideas for side dishes?

  • Alan Fors

    Any ideas for side dishes?

    Wings, in a five-sided bowl.

  • brutlyhonest

    Wings, in a five-sided bowl.

WaitWhat? You mean the WTC complex wasn’t the only place attacked on 9/11?

  • jane

That shit is why I love this place.^^

  • outofline

9/11 is “Rudy’s Day.” It doesn’t belong to anyone else.Gingrich is dumb as a box of rocks and I don’t mean to imply that he’s smarter than one rock. It’s the excessive hair that’s wrapped around his brain.I saw somewhere that 9/11 was all about the store sales.

These right-wingers really give new meaning to the phrase “We hold these truths to be self-evident…”

I think they’ve changed it to “We hold these perceptions to be self-evident…”
