Newt Gingrich Doesn’t Understand Stimulus

Okay, now Newt is being deliberately stupid about various forms of stimulus. With Greta on Fox News Channel:

I mean, I — you know, somehow, I don’t understand how liberal math turns $1 into $1.79.

Fact: food stamps stimulate the economy because they directly help people to buy things in stores. Specifically food. More accurately, $1 of government money spent on food stamps creates $1.74 in stimulus, according to Moody’s.

Once again, here are the multipliers:

    Liberal math? OK there.

  • Becky Kutz

I suppose it’s better than “fuzzy math.” At least this helps connect the term “liberal” to “reality.”

  • Thos

I’m pretty sure math is a liberal scheme in general, therefore it has a well know liberal bias and shouldn’t be used.I hear reality has the same bias.:)

Newt undersands the math perfectly well. He’s just being a fucking dick and trying, and probably succeeding in, confusing the rubes that still listen to this nutbag.Well gee, Newt, I don’t understand how conservative math turns $1.00 into $1.01. Oh yeah, actually I do. It does nothing to help economic growth.

Newt is just being deliberately misleading, not stupid.

  • JackDanieL

Well I don’t understand how a grown man can go by the term/”name” Newt…but hey, cest la vie douchebag

I can’t tell which end is Newt’s ass when he speaks anymore. Seriously. It all sounds like an exaggerated vulgar beer fart nowadays. But It takes a special kind of prick to sit there and suggest we repo the rug vulnerable Americans happen to be standing upon due to three decades of Republican fuck ups.Paraphrasing Newt: Our policies sucked middle income Americans dry, depressed your wages, stretched your productivity, busted your unions, and shipped your jobs to China and India for pennies on the dollar, and now we want your life line! CEO’s are the job creators, moochers! You’re infringing on their right to success! The Walmart food court is hiring. Obama hates white people!Gingrich is a professional lying sack of shit. There’s good money to be made whoring for CEOs and multinational corporations. His bullshit is his job security. On a lighter note, one of my jobs, video photography work, finds me meeting and making small talk with dozens of small business owners a month, and yesterday while up in the north-western-ish region of Illinois, I had what I’m calling today– }a Democratic Party day.”Let me explain as briefly as I can. So, I met with exactly 12 small business owners throughout the day and without revealing my political leanings, as that would be inappropriate and unprofessional, I was struck by my first stop– an independent home improvement and construction company employing a trim crew of workers. He was adding on to a house(two-room addition, driveway repave, entrance remodel)and he commented several times, enthusiastically, on the energy efficiency of the materials he was using and all the tax cuts and incentives to build in more energy efficient ways. Things were going pretty good, according to him. His business wasn’t “BOOMING!” but he was feeling pretty good about policies that made his sales and production easier and more profitable. Nice guy, too. Tax incentives for small businesses for energy efficient building materials…?”Score one for Democrats!” I said to myself. On to the next one. A financial services provider employing a humble crew of five. I walk in and he’s got two portraits of George Washington hanging in his office, on otherwise bare walls, watching over his back– and front. A really good one of G.W. praying next to his horse in the harsh winter landscape at Valley Forge. Great portrait. I commented on how much I too liked Washington, commented on his farewell address, and then said something to the effect of, “so, you’ve got the president watching your back!” and he didn’t catch the reference, and said, “yeah, Obama’s Financial Services…” and without any hint of snark? It was refreshing, actually. Then he talked about how he’d just recently moved into this bigger office and was looking forward to hiring a couple more people. All this small talk was very subtle, mind you, but at this point I was looking for clues to the vibe of the real economy, and was picking up on the subtleties. But a positive-ish, non-snarky reference to Obama, and looking to hire– seemed like another one for the Democrats to me!On to the next one. A small healthcare clinic operated by a husband and wife team specializing in backs and necks, with some emphasis on new technology examining foot pressure. Now, I’m not going to say, “score one for the Dems’,” but they were very very nice people, and they both commented on the open tollway in Illinois that was made possible by former Illinois Governor, Rod Blagojevich. They said it made their commute much easier, and relieved the stress of wasting their lives sitting in traffic. I took it as a positive comment for the former Democratic gov’, and in the world of dirty politics, It’s not easy to find someone who would dare compliment Blago’ for something like making life easier for them to do their work. A right winger wouldn’t dare compliment Blago. These people were educated blue-bloods. Score one for the Democrats! It went on like this throughout the day, picking up on the little subtleties, positive outlooks and unsolicited feedback. An auto body shop. A dog groomer. A candy shop. Optometrist, and so on.But, there was one shitty little car dealership with less than a dozen, dirty, unwashed cars on display operated by a Russian couple who when I went inside, had a framed autographed picture of George W. Bush sharing frame space with Ronald Reagan.(Normally, I really appreciate things that perform “double-duty”. That picture frame hosting two pictures, for example, and I’m tickled whenever I see it. If you could eat off the picture frame, it would be a more purist form of “double-duty,” but I digress.)”Bah!” I said to myself, while politely engaged. Score 1 for the pukes, who all but dismantled domestic auto over the years. But on a beautiful autumn day in middle America, it was most definitely, a Democratic day.I’m seeing green shoots out there, people.

I should go to bed right now, MrBrink, because it can’t get any better than this today. Thanks for sharing this story.

Off topic … is anyone watching this train wreck on the Rachel Maddow Show?

MrBrink, thanks so much for sharing. A lovely, uplifting story.

  • mattpd

Most of the people he is pandering too don’t understand it either. They’ll like that a smart guy like him doesn’t understand it, making them feel better because if newt doesn’t get it, it makes sense I don’t.That’s what it comes to with identity politics.GWB was someone I wanted to have a beer with…Sarah Palin is a mom just like I am struggling with her kids just to get by…

  • MrBrink

    Vote, vote, vote.

  • DC

Of course Newt is being deliberately stupid. He’s playing to his audience.

From “How the Great Recession Was Brought to an End” Alan S. Blinder (Princeton Univ) & Mark Zandi (darling of the left and of the right):

“We find that (federal stimulus programs) effects on real GDP, jobs, and inflation are huge, and probably averted what could have been called Great Depression 2.0. For example, we estimate that, without the government’s response, GDP in 2010 would be about 11.5% lower, payroll employment would be less by some 8½ million jobs, and the nation would now be experiencing deflation.”

“Note: The bang for the buck is estimated by the one year $ change in GDP for a given $ reduction in federal tax revenue or increase in spending.”
