    I’m in a very similar situation to Elvis. I don’t make six figures but my house costs only about 11% of my salary. Unfortunately, I can rent a much better house for less than my current mortgage. Some houses I can rent for half of what I am paying on my current mortgage. The value of my house is now 1/3 of what I owe on it. Can anyone say, “albatross”. I’ve decided to stop paying the mortgage as of this month. As Elvis likes to say, “Bank of America can suck it!”

    Steve – I don’t remember asking for anyone’s sympathy re: The Farm of Doom, especially since the whole point is to shed this place without shitting another $20 or $30K down its endless moneysucking craphole. I’ve always been candid about how much I make, but it’s all relative to one’s debt load and cost of living. When it literally costs more than a grand a month in propane and electricity to keep the Farm of Doom HEATED in negative 30 degree winters, it may be time to cut and run.The seven years I’ve lived on the Farm of Doom have been the most stressful, emotionally fraught and financially challenging of my life. You come spend 7 years in my shoes, watch your job screw you out of $21,320.23 in a single year, rack up almost that much in medical bills even WITH pretty good health insurance, and then judge me and my financial problems.But hey, thanks for listening!

    Hahahaah, thats about as close to “regret” as I think we’ll see Mr. Dingledein slideGreat show, as always fellas. You guys really do have a great chemistry and I feel like I am just sitting around bullshitting with good friends when I listen.I think that you missed the point on the Sarah Palin 1st Amendment thing though — and I realize you were just kinda tossing it in at the end of the show. I also realize that you both know this already, and just didnt spit it out.Sure she is stupid. But not so stupid that she doesnt realize, or pay someone to realize, that she is contradicting herself from every angle on the 1st Amendment issue. Its her game…its her schtick. She is only talking to the folks who feel she can do no wrong, no matter what. So all she is doing with this issue, is what she does with every issue, she nails herself to the cross with it. When it makes a sweet winky snarky snippet to say that the 1st Amendment protects radio show hosts from being fired or losing sponsors – she says that – they cheer. When its more newsworthy or profitable to “interpret” the 1st Amendment to mean that the Government should…ya know…limit speech you happen to disagree with – bingo – the crowd goes wild.I think she knows what she’s saying.

    @Jack, I think what it points out about Palin is that she is so fundamentally dishonest. A thoughtful and honest person would have said ‘I agree with the ruling but I am still uncomfortable with the hate that the Westboro protesters spew’, kinda like what Elvis said. I still don’t know how stupid she really is. She’s definitely ignorant but that can be corrected in most people if they wish to change that fact–she doesn’t. And after all, why should she? She’s had phenomenal success being ignorant. There is no motivation to change whatsoever. Still, her dishonesty is almost pathological (Lexaburn is more the expert on that than I am :) and that worries me more than any other aspect of her character.@SteveB…while I don’t make 6 figures….I make a decent living and like Elvis CAN afford my home, but the point really is why? Why should we live with the albatrosses around our neck to the day we die, never recouping our investment when banks walk away from underwater real estate deals EVERY day without penalty. And even though I do make enough, it’s just barely. I had a child last year, C-Section with complications, and it cost about $25,000 and we paid out of pocket about $5,000. Thank goodness I HAVE health insurance, that I’ve I was born with a good mind and had the presence of mind to get through college while I was young and unencumbered.@Elvis – I think you might be my long lost brother or cousin or something, seriously dude. I wish you all the best and am glad the Peanut is on board with the move thing. I have to tell my daughter this weekend that we’ll be moving and I’m so worried she’s gonna take it badly.

    Well said IrishGirland regarding your home — who, with a sound financial mind, would fight or struggle AT ALL to hang on to a declining asset? It is just another banker dogwhistle that makes us feel any guilt at all for renegging on our mortgages.Whenever I bought a home, I was made very aware of the fact that I was essentially entering into a contract with the bank – they lend me the money, I buy the house, I repay the money or else THEY TAKE THE HOUSE AWAY. Take it, its yours fuckers.But now that they are losing value by the minute, the banks try to appeal to our softer side and make us feel like crooks for making smart financial decisions.Fuck em all.

    I absolutely love this blog and watch like a hawk for updates, but this was the first Bob and Elvis show I’ve been able to listen to. I refuse to get internet at home and listening at work has never been an option. My new fancy phone now allows me to listen to you guys and it was, for lack of better words, totally awesome :) I’ll be tuning in to the show religiously from now on. Thanks for what you do guys! Ya’ll keep me mildly sane in a world gone batshit crazy!

    @Jack yeah, you’re probably right on that point. Palin wouldn’t say a durn thing if Westboro didn’t hassle soldiers’ families. If it was my kid’s funeral, I honestly think I’d have to be restrained……emotions would be just too raw.
