No good TNG movies? Come on, First Contact is pretty damn’ great. How can you not love a movie with the line “You broke your little ships”? I’m willing to give Rick Berman, Brannon Braga and Ronald D. Moore a pass on a hell of a lot, just because of that line.Is Chewbacca running? The campaign slogan writes itself: “Let the wookiee win.”For insight into MASH, poke around at Ken Levine’s blog. Levine and his partner, David Isaacs, wrote for the series after Larry Gelbart left.Andrew Breitbart = internet troll. Damnation, Bob, that’s spot-on.Thanks for the sanity, gentlemen.

First Contact made absolutely no sense. See the Plinkett review for details and many laughs. The most important point Plinkett makes about the TNG movies is that there are Two Picards: TV Picard and Movie Picard; the former is calm, reasonable, philosophic, learned, compassionate and brainy. The latter is a violent, frothing psychopath who kills things and enjoys “redneck off-roading” in his stupid little “futuristic all-terrain vehicle”. Movie Picard can suck it.

Elvis, WTF? Who cares what the far right thinks? I mean, come on….As Bob said, they’ll keep going after him no matter what he does.Comments.I understand that they’re a pain in the ass….maybe you could put someone else in charge…..say, Ashby, for example. Just a thought.

Rachel Maddow = Edward R. Murrow ….completely agree!I don’t see why HP should have opposing viewpoints from the right wing on at all. Does Drudge have the POV of the LW on? Does any RW site do that? Can’t the left have one damn place where we don’t have freaking opposing/extraneous/stupid/bullshit viewpoints on???

  • Anya

Elvis, were you taken hostage by you’re wingnut relatives and did they force you to listen to right-wing radio 24/7? I don’t get why you want everything to be seen from the prism winguts?

I didn’t do a very good job of explaining myself so I can totally understand this confounded backlash against my position last night. I probably can’t explain it much better viz Libya, but I think I have a legitimate point on the gun control issue. One of the Wingnut Memes that has real-time and potentially disastrous social and political consequences is the idea that this president, in particular, is hostile to gun-owning Americans and their cherished gun-toting ways of life. It started with that backroom comment he made about Clinging To Guns and Religion and has since metastasized into the idea that Obama Is Coming For Our Guns, AIIEEE!! This had the rather terrifying effect of spiking gun and ammunition sales immediately after he was elected in what was probably the most accelerated arming of rednecks since the day after Lincoln was sworn in.So if I’m this president, I’m not going to do anything extra-Congressionally or -Constitutionally when it comes to gun control or the 2nd Amendment, period. In fact, I’d leave the entire issue alone. There’s simply no immediate need to waste political cycles and brain matter on gun control when everything else is falling apart around us. So when stories like this come out, I think it’s ENTIRELY appropriate to view this particular issue THROUGH THAT INSANE WINGNUT PRISM! Let’s take a look at some of the comments following the linked story, which says basically nothing, shall we?

“1/20/2013………..THIS IDIOT WILL BE GONE !!!!!!”"We have to get everyone out to vote in 2012 to this terrible threat to America out of office!”"Let’s see, Obama’s AAA (Anti American Administration) wants the people in Lybia to have guns but not Americans! Maybe the natives are restless here in the US !!”"Every time I go to a gun show, my faith that America will remain free is renewed.”"He just wants to keep tightening the laws until one day he will outlaw them so he can become a dictator like the rest of his communist buddies. It will be the very last day that Obama has any control over this country.”

And it goes on, and on, and on like that for over 400 comments. Sure, most of them are All Mouth and No Bang-Bang. But one of those quotes could belong to the next Tuscon Shooter, propelled by a Wingnut-driven hysteria and certain that this president wants him disarmed to further take over this country’s delicious White-scented Freedom. So on this issue, with this president, I absolutely think there are Ways and Means off-limits given the REALITY of the Wingnut echosphere. If the president wants tighter gun control laws, let Congress fight it out among the duly-elected representatives of all 50 states and their insane gun-toting constituents. This isn’t an issue on which to be seen purposefully avoiding Congress. Is all I’m sayin.

  • http://www.politicalruminations.com/ Nicole473

Point taken, Elvis. But my issue was with your comments about Libya and playing in to the Wingnut nonsense about world domination, blah blah blah.On gun control, I agree. It just isn’t worth it considering the frenzy of the gun-toting wingnuts on this issue.

First Contact made absolutely no sense.Never said it did. It’s a Star Trek movie, so making sense is secondary to making skiploads of money for Paramount (did any of the Kirk/Spock ST movies make sense?).As for TV Picard and Movie Picard: agreed. Berman (presumably) and Paramount decided to turn Picard into an Action Hero, a 25th-century John McClane. It was an awkward fit, at best.[/geek]

Elvis, I agree with the gun control issue. Unless it’s through the legislative branch, the President should not give the wingers a wedge issue. Right now, because the wingnut governors’ overreach, Dems have a chance of winning back some in the gun and god crowd (specially union members). And any wrong move will shift the argument to guns. What I have a huge issue with is how you framed the Libya issue, specially, when you were talking about the President being “egged on by Samantha Power.”The role of an advisor is to argue for his/her point skillfully and hope she/he will persuade the President. The fact that three strong women agreed on one issue, and convinced the President is an issue only for misogynists and media assholes who are always looking for a sensational story. I expect someone as smart and progressive as you to push back hard on that and ridicule anyone who pulls that stupid argument. What I don’t expect is that you go all chicken little on us.I hope in next week’s podcast, we will get the defiant Elvis, of “Election 2010″ episode of Bob and Elvis.

Great show guys, thanks. Elvis, I highly recommend Nick Kristof’s piece on Libya if you haven’t read it already. Here is a link.http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/24/opinion/24kristof.html?_r=4&hp

My husband and I are both Trekkies and when we got married 2 1/2 years ago, we discovered that perhaps we were meant to be together. With the exception of 2 movies, one which remains missing from our collection, between us we had the complete set of Star Trek movies. We both had Wrath of Khan and he had 1, 5, and 6. I had 4, 7-9 (the TNG movies I had received as a boxed set gift). We added Nemesis, which I pretended didn’t exist, but was badgered into buying (2nd hand!) by the husband. Every once in a while, I blurt out the line, “Genesis is planet forbidden” as a reminder that we still need 3.Campy, somewhat ridiculous, but fun and sometimes fun to make fun of – the best hope for some of these movies is for the Riff Trax folks to get to all of them. We have the reboot Star Trek on Riff Trax and our next in line to purchase are the movies from TNG cast. Hilarity will ensue, but I do my own commentary every time I’m forced to watch one that I freely admit aren’t as good as they should have and could have been. Still, I’m glad to be a Trek fan and I wouldn’t give up the movies for anything.

OK Elvis, first last week, now this week. First, the massacre was in a Jewish community in the Shomron region, not Gaza. As it is, I’m surprised that Andrew Sullivan didn’t spit on their graves, given his antipathy toward Israel (just ask Leon Wieseltier, his Atlantic colleague). Second, Ron Schiller still said something about “Jewish-controlled media”, unless that was cut and pasted out of context. Now, this week. There will never be a NFZ over Gaza. The only way that happens is if Hamas and its butt-buddy Islamic Jihad stop shooting rockets and mortars at civilians and stop the weapons smuggling, and even then, there would be no reason to have a NFZ, as there would be no reason to bomb Gaza, let alone have an embargo against it. To compare the Libyan revolutionaries to Hamas is to demean the revolutionaries.

  • http://twitter.com/elding Elvis Dingeldein

It was never my intention to COMPARE Gaza and its population with Libya and its revolutionaries, I was just saying that tensions are escalating in the region and now we’ve set this precedence for intervention that we may not be able to live up to in every situation. And this is what I was talking about as far as escalations in the region:

[Netanyahu] said Israel is “prepared to act with great force” to stop a wave of Palestinian attacks from Gaza. Dozens of rockets and mortar shells have been fired across the border over the past week, terrorizing residents of southern Israel. Israel has responded with air strikes. It is the most serious escalation of violence since the Gaza War two years ago.

I know there’ll never be a NFZ above Gaza as long as we’ve got Israel’s dick in our ear, but what happens to our credibility in the region when the Arabs getting the shit kicked out of them are young Palestinians protesting despotic Israeli rule and getting strafed from Israeli helicopters? All I’m sayin.

Just starting to listen to the show now. WordPress is a very good option. I have used it in the past and it is only getting better now. Off to finish listening.

  • http://www.politicalruminations.com/ Nicole473

@elvis….it is currently Hamas, which as you know is a terrorist organization by any civilized definition, “getting the shit kicked out of them”.

  • http://willpen.wordpress.com/ Willpen

Almost through listening. Another great show guys. With or without the arguing. And Elvis… I am definitely with you on the earlier MASH shows being much better. I was a Trapper John person, but nothing can be better than the original movie. Just a bit of movie trivia. The original Margaret’s last named, played by Sally Kellerman, was O’Houlihan not Houlihan like the TV show.

WordPress in some forms doesn’t allow Google ads or others. There are some high traffic blogs that can get monetized, you have to give them a cut as I recall, but my wordpress.com blog doesn’t allow ads. I just learned that. :)

  • http://www.politicalruminations.com/ Nicole473

jim, they allow them if you run wordpress on your own site, hosted by someone other than wordpress.com.

Okay, you missed the point of Worf. They spent the first 12 episodes establishing the fact that he was one mean MoFo. Then they used him for the rest of the series to show what a mean powerful villain they had this week.”See… he took Worf down with one punch. This guy is a bad ass.”And let us remember, ALL of Star Trek Makes No Sense.Faster than light travel, Humanoids everywhere, every planet has an oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere, aliens and humans mate and have offspring laser beams are visible in space… Sorry, I’ll stop now. But a good story is what I want. But in the Disney movie “The Black Hole” where I saw a person fall out of an open window on a space ship, I draw the line.Great show. Nothing wrong with disagreement. It the fertilizer of good ideas.
