Everyone's least favorite asshole, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, is reportedly dropping out of the race because no one likes him.
(CNN) New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is huddling with top campaign aides on Wednesday and all indications are they expect him to formally suspend his bid for the Republican nomination, according to two sources. Details are still being worked out.
One source noted that the New Jersey governor is a "political realist" and understood that not qualifying to appear in Saturday's debate and the lack of money made it impossible to go forward.
This was inevitable.
Christie's shtick as a tough talkin' asshole never played well with anyone except the beltway media and it wasn't even a unique trait after Donald Trump entered the race. Christie's demise, however, began long before he formally announced his candidacy.
Christie's popularity among the general public entered a sharp decline in 2013 and never recovered but, more importantly, Republicans abandoned him in droves because he publicly cooperated with President Obama after Hurricane Sandy devastated the region in 2012.
No amount of unhinged rants or tirades Christie unleashed over the last six months was going to erase the image Republicans have burned into their heads of him embracing the president after an historic natural disaster.
Supporting any of the president's policies, no matter how trivial, would be a kiss of death in itself, but Christie literally embraced him.
