That Giggling Sound You Hear…

…is the far-right snickering at this week’s Newsweek cover.

I have a column for The Daily Banter coming up today with this cover as the launching pad. But I can already hear right-wing talk radio pointing and laughing at this one, and you can bet it’ll be coupled with “San Francisco.”

Mother’s Day Appreciation

Artist – Pat Bagley

In other news, Mitt Romney’s son, Josh, was booed off the stage yesterday at the Arizona Republican Party convention by a pack of rabid Ron Paul supporters. Some apparently shouted that he is a “white Obama.”

Also — the National Guard has confirmed the identity of an Iraq War veteran who allegedly joined and trained a Neo-Nazi white-supremacist militia in preparation for the upcoming “race-war.” According to the FBI, the group was planning to commit a series of hate crimes.

Happy Mother’s Day to our readers.

A Word for Anti-Gay Republicans

If you’re a Republican and you’re against same-sex marriage and consider homosexuality to be an abomination, here’s a classic clip from The West Wing for you. I like to roll this out from time to time. Watch it.

So What?

In other news, Mitt Romney has delivered another flip-flop in record-breaking time, reversing his position on gay adoption within 24 hours.

This reversal came just in time for his commencement speech at Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University today.

House Republicans Are Tired of Your “Data”

What better way to manufacture excuses for eliminating social programs than to defund the government agency that tracks local poverty, education, and demographics?

Republicans in the House inexplicably voted this week to defund the American Community Survey (ACS), the nation’s main source of state and local data on affordable housing, household income, poverty, race, state-to-state migration, immigration, education level of the workforce, types of disabilities of local residents, and scores of other major topics.

The federal government uses the data to distribute more than $400 billion in federal formula funds each year, and the information helps communities and businesses decide where to build new roads, bridges, schools, homes, and stores. Business groups including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Retail Federation, International Council of Shopping Centers, and National Association of Home Builders consider the data vital.

The House proposed no alternative to collecting these data.

And as the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities points out, eliminating the ACS would actually increase the cost of the census because the Census Bureau would have to hire additional staff to make up for it.

Something in the Republican brain compels them to be as inefficient and foolhardy as possible. It’s a sight to behold.

Idiot Quote of the Day

“I wasn’t sure that his views on marriage could get any gayer.” -Rand Paul on President Obama’s gay marriage endorsement

Ha! Get it? That is so gay!

Of course Paul said this to thunderous laughter from the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition. Because nothing says faith and freedom like laughing at gay jokes borrowed from yesteryear.

The Most Anti-Gay Rant Ever

Via Mediaite, um, what?

“P-e-n-i-s goes into the anus.”

Is it me or is every Republican sounding like a Tony Clifton-ish meta-satire these days?

Proof That Romney Isn’t A Bullying A-Hole

In response to Romney’s cruel gay-bashing youth, staffers are struggling to come up with a good example of Romney’s compassion. Like this one:

In defending Romney as “deeply compassionate” and “unfailingly kind,” [Kerry Healy, a campaign adviser] referred back to debates during the GOP primary when Romney was “being attacked from every side.”

“His response was always professional, calm, civil,” she pointed out. “In fact, he even intervened on behalf [of] — to try to help — Gov. Perry when he was stumbling. His impulses are very kind impulses and there should be no debate about whether or not Gov. Romney is a bully.”

That’s right. Romney was nice to Rick Perry during a crushing gaffe. Boy, his Commander Data Emotion Chip must’ve been working overtime on that day.

Worst Person in the World

The anonymous coward who’s doing this:

An unidentified entrepreneur admits he is trying to profit off Trayvon Martin’s death by selling gun range targets featuring the teen who’s death has sparked a nationwide controversy.

Although Martin’s face does not appear on the paper targets, they feature a hoodie with crosshairs aimed at the chest. A bag of Skittles is tucked in the pocket and a hand is holding a can resembling iced tea. [...]

According to an advertisement for the targets that had been posted on a popular firearms auction website, the sellers stated they “support Zimmerman and believe he is innocent and that he shot a thug.”

That’s right. Trayvon Martin shooting targets. Gun zealots are classy.
