A Transgender Woman Was Assaulted in a D.C. Grocery Store Restroom

A transgender women was involved in an assault in a Washington D.C. grocery store, but she was the victim, not the perpetrator.

A security guard at a Giant grocery store entered the women's restroom and forcibly removed a transgender woman who was minding her own business.

The officer came into the restroom and told her to get out, according to Belcher.

She said the officer put her hand on her shoulder and arm, grabbed her and pushed her out of the store.

Belcher said the guard told her, "You guys cannot keep coming in here and using our women's restroom. They did not pass the law yet."

There is actually no law required to pass before transgender women can use the women's restroom. They've been doing so all along before the right wing launched their anti-transgender crusade; before people like this security guard got the idea in their head that policing gender identity is their duty.

The Giant security guard was arrested by D.C. police because assaulting someone in the restroom is already illegal. We don't need a special law for that. Republicans have passed their transphobic "bathroom bills" under the guise of safety, but we already have laws on the books for assault.
