If you're a red state conservative you're probably hoping that the Supreme Court will smite Obamacare and bring chaos to the United Stated healthcare system, but you should be careful what you wish for.
According to a new report, red states will be hit the hardest if the Supreme Court rules against the federal government, and it's not even very close. About 60 percent of those who would lose their subsidies live in red states.
[The] people who currently rely on subsidies to help them pay for plans purchased on Obamacare’s federal marketplaces are more highly concentrated in red states, according to the latest report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which provides the most accurate snapshot so far of Obamacare enrollment.
Across the country, about 10.2 million people are covered under plans that they purchased through Obamacare’s marketplaces, according to HHS officials.
Out of the 10.2 million people who receive subsidies through the marketplace, 6.4 million of them live in states that chose not to establish a state exchange and instead rely on the federal exchange. And as you're probably aware, states that chose not to establish their own exchange are predominately (but not exclusively) conservative.
I would guess that many people in the most vulnerable states have no understanding of what the consequences of this could be. It would be a pyrrhic, ideological victory that will destabilize the healthcare industry in their home states and ruin a lot of lives, including the lives of their family and neighbors.
It remains to be seen if the Supreme Court justices understand what the consequences could be.
