Wingnuts

Bipartisanship Is Creating More Polarization

As near as I can tell, the only crazy wingnut topic-of-the-week that hasn't forced a concession from one group or another is the Birther thing. I assume this was only because the Obama people already released the birth certificate over year ago.

Let's look at the major wingnut memes.

1) The end-of-life provision. Gone.

2) President's speech to the kids. Lesson plan guidelines have been removed or revised.

3) Right-Wing Extremist report. Revised by DHS.

4) Healthcare reform. Hanging the balance.

Whether it's the White House or the congressional Democrats or miscellaneous, the consequences will be the same: Acquiescing to crazy people will only legitimize and encourage the crazy people and their loud noises. So the effort to appear bipartisan is actually deepening the trenches of polarization because there's no incentive for the wingnuts to moderate their positions. I mean, if they're given almost everything they want, why should they?

And then, as time goes on and this continues, how do we, as liberal and progressive activists allow ourselves to be heard above the loud noises? Naturally, the tendency, whether by accident or design, will be to get equally as loud. Partisanship and polarization digs even deeper.

Naturally, there's always going to be partisanship. But this idea of bending over backwards to appease even the craziest fringe protests isn't going to make bipartisanship more likely, or more appealing.
