The fact that conservative lawmakers in Texas are seeking to criminalize transgender bathroom use probably isn't the most shocking thing you'll read today, but Texas Republicans are also seeking to criminalize businesses that chose not to discriminate.
The bill also targets any “operator, manager, superintendent, or other person with authority over a building,” stipulating that they may not allow anyone to enter a locker room, shower facility, or toilet facility that does not match their gender. Any facility owner who does allow such access has committed a state jail felony. Texas law would dictate a minimum of 180 days in prison with a maximum of two years, as well a fine up to $10,000.
A hypocrite is born every minute in today's Republican party. This is big government. This is the Republican "nanny state."
On a personal level, transphobia is something I clearly will not ever understand. I, like most people, stopped believing in cooties sometime between the third and fourth grade. I can recall a time when I may have made a transphobic joke, but I was a teenager and I didn't know any better.
Lawmakers aren't teenagers. They're middle-aged adults who should know better and should mind their own business.
