While California is the state that hired him, this is good news for people nationwide.
California has hired former Attorney General Eric Holder to serve as outside counsel for the state in their fight against despot-elect Donald Trump.
“He will be our lead litigator, and he will have a legal team of expert lawyers on the issues of climate change, women and civil rights, the environment, immigration, voting rights — to name just a few,” Senate leader Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) said in an interview.
Such a task typically falls to the state attorney general. On Tuesday, Gov. Jerry Brown formally nominated Democratic Rep. Xavier Becerra to replace former Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris, who now serves in the U.S. Senate.
When high profile cases against the Trump administration work their way through the Ninth District Court of Appeals, Holder will represent the state of California and the cases he litigates will have implications for everyone.
This is excellent news because Holder undoubtedly understands the intricacies of federal law significantly better than whatever incompetent racist toady argues cases on behalf of Trump and the GOP. In the past, Holder was responsible was enforcing or upholding the same laws that Trump and the GOP may challenge in the coming years.
Holder more than demonstrated his commitment to civil rights during his time as attorney general. One of his many responsibilities was rebuilding the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division after it was more or less dismantled by the Bush administration.
I doubt there will even be a Civil Rights Division after Trump and the GOP are finished.
