The Select Benghazi Committee asked former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to testify and she agreed to do so as long as the interview was held publicly rather than privately.
Private testimony given to the Benghazi Committee has a history of being selectively leaked to the press.
Her public testimony was a disaster for the committee and the GOP and this, according to Representative Lynn Westmoreland (R), was all a part of her nefarious plan to embarrass them.
“Now to me, that was us stepping in a trap because we should have known that she was going to go on and just stall, debate, filibuster, on these answers to make it go as long as possible, so we would look cruel,” he continued. [...]
“You know, a lot of people have said, ‘she did great, you know, no harm, she did really good, she handled the committee.’ I don’t know where in the world you can be proven a liar on national TV and think you had a good week, but they think that is having a good week, that she was caught in a lie,” Westmoreland said.
I personally watched about 7 hours of the 11 hour interview and I can tell you the "questions" that more often than not resembled statements which Clinton faced were often longer than her answers.
No one forced the Republicans to hold a 11-hour-long hearing. Many of the questions she answered were not even directly related to Benghazi, and many others were repeat questions.
Hillary Clinton clearly did have a "good week" otherwise Representative Westmoreland would have no reason to float this conspiracy theory. But if it were true that she somehow tricked them into making asses of themselves, why would you want to admit that if you're a Republican? Aren't you admitting that she got the best of you?
I have an alternative theory: Republicans will invariably embarrass themselves any time the game of grabass they call governance is placed under a microscope.
It's going to be a long damn 8 years for the GOP if Hillary Clinton is elected president.
