We have an unprecedented disaster in the Gulf right now. And despite it, we plan to continue drilling offshore -- deep water oil drilling. Around 44 percent of Americans still support offshore oil drilling, but prior to the disaster, 63 percent of Americans supported offshore drilling.
Meanwhile, we're staring down a global climate crisis. Check this map, for example. Considering the too-little-too-late reaction to oil drilling, and in my most pessimistic hours, I don't think popular opinion will shift accordingly until after it's too late. And even then, only moderately so.
