Bobby Jindal was so terrible last night and his Katrina story was so inexplicable that it successfully disguised the lying.
While some of the projects in the bill make sense, their legislation is larded with wasteful spending. It includes $300 million to buy new cars for the government, $8 billion for high-speed rail projects, such as a "magnetic levitation" line from Las Vegas to Disneyland, and $140 million for something called "volcano monitoring." Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington, D.C.
First, as we all know, the Disneyland train doesn't exist anywhere in the recovery bill so that was a big fat lie.
Second, the "new cars" are fuel efficient cars that will reduce government spending. Why is Jindal against reducing spending?
Third, what the hell is wrong with making sure people know when a volcano is going to explode and wipe out their homes? I would think that someone who lived through Katrina would understand the benefits of an effective early warning system.
When the Republicans aren't fabricating items out of thin air, they use this rhetorical trick in which they make serious programs sound ridiculous just by using an outraged tone of voice. The government is spending your money on magnetic levitation?! Is that crazy magic of some sort? What's next? The government is going to saw your wallet in half?! Tee-hee!
