Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump launched his campaign by blaming all of the nation's problems on Mexican immigrants, and that position may also be where he concludes his campaign.
According to the Wall Street Journal, at some point today Trump is going to say Mexicans are responsible for generating stories about his sexually predatory behavior.
Donald Trump will broaden his attack against the media to hit globalism and the Clinton Foundation by charging that Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim is part of a biased coalition working in collusion with the Clinton campaign and its supporters to generate news reports of decades-old allegations from several women. [...]
Attacking the Mexican billionaire would allow Mr. Trump to hit several targets. He could slam the “failing” New York Times, which he says had to be “rescued” by a “foreigner”—Mr. Slim, the adviser said.
Recent polling has pegged Trump's support among Latino voters at around 15 percent. There's still a chance that number could go lower.
For perspective, George W. Bush won 40 percent of the Latino vote in 2004. John McCain won 31 percent and Mitt Romney won 27 percent.
But it's not just Latino voters who may be insulted by this latest talking point. Virtually everyone should be insulted because Trump clearly believes we're all just as dumb as he is.
His base will love it, but he can't win with just his base. Trump is alienating and distilling his base down at the expense of every other demographic.
It should be noted that Carlos Slim actually has Lebanese ancestry, but that's obviously not the intended message here. Trump's campaign knows who Slim is, but all his supporters will hear is "Mexican."
