During the first presidential debate, Hillary Clinton hit Trump for referring to former Miss Universe Alicia Machado as "Miss Piggy" and "Miss Housekeeping."
Trump and his campaign could have left it all at the debate and moved on but, as you know, they didn't. Trump and his surrogates launched a wave of attacks on Machado the following morning and essentially said he was right to call her fat.
They took the bait.
Trump campaign surrogate Newt Gingrich himself defended Trump and attacked Machado by saying you're "not suppose to gain 60 pounds" when you're Miss Universe, but Gingrich now says this is all a conspiracy just like Benghazi.
It's also just like Ferguson and Bosnia (???) and... whateverthefuck else Newt is talking about here.
GINGRICH: "I think as fascinating to look at how the elite media bought — this is the new Benghazi lie — what Hillary tried to set up, and what they spend apparently months preparing was an ambush that was as false as Benghazi. It was as false as her claim she was under fire in Bosnia. It was as false as the lies she told about her emails.
The elite media, which is Clinton, they totally identify with her, they took it hook, line, and sinker. For three or four days they have run with it, and now, as happened in Ferguson, as happened in Benghazi, as happened in Bosnia, it’s all starting to fall apart because it’s based on a series of falsehoods.”
Yes, they certainly did take the bait hook, line, and sinker. "They" being Newt Gingrich and the rest of the Trump campaign.
Just this morning between the hours of 3 and 5 a.m., Trump lobbed a series of unhinged tweets accusing Machado of appearing in a sex tape. We're currently on day four of Trump's crusade against the former Miss Universe.
If this is all one big conspiracy as Gingrich says it is, that wouldn't explain why Trump himself continues to talk about it.
