House Republicans Select Steve King to Chair a Task Force on Obama’s Executive Orders on Immigration

Written by SK Ashby

It has always seemed fairly clear that Republicans do not really care about garnering minority votes, but they're really tempting fate here.

Congressional Republicans have selected Iowa congressman and secret border control agent Steve "Calves the Size of Cantaloupes" King (R) to head a task force on executive overreach.

The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday approved the task force, which will be chaired by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa). The top Democrat on the task force will be Rep. Steve Cohen (Tenn.). [...]

Republicans are upset with President Obama’s use of executive action, particularly his recent moves to enact gun control and prevent millions of illegal immigrants from being deported.

The task force will "study the impact the increase in presidential and executive branch power has had on the ability of Congress” and look for legislative approaches to “restore the proper balance of powers.”

There's no big mystery here. We all know what Steve King's opinion and judgement as chairman will be.

We know Steve King is one of the most if not the most virulently anti-immigrant lawmaker in the country and the GOP has just given him the keys to determine the party's policy agenda regarding immigration reform and deferred action.

If Republican lawmakers are truly interested in finding "legislative approaches" to "restore the proper balance of powers," they could start by actually passing legislation. They haven't done that. They've refused to pass comprehensive immigration reform.

They haven't passed immigration reform and they've blocked an expansion of background checks. They've left President Obama with very little choice but to exercise executive discretion and authority.

I have my doubts that this so-called "task force" will accomplish anything beyond calling the president a poopyhead.
