That's right, 222 Republicans voted for a bill that's arguably the most absurd piece of legislation ever presented in the House.
(WASHINGTON) -- The House passed H.R. 1255 on Friday, the Government Shutdown Prevention Act, 221-202. One Republican voted present.
This bill states that if the Senate fails to pass a measure supplying appropriations to the federal government for the remainder of the fiscal year 2011 before April 8, 2011—the deadline to avoid a government shutdown—H.R. 1, which passed the House on February 19, 2011 will become “law of the land.”
As I described in my Huffington Post column this week, HR 1255 creates a law -- an official law called HR 1 -- without that law having been approved by the Senate and signed by the president. Furthermore, HR 1255 itself will never become law without those same steps. Yes, 222 Republicans voted for this, and it makes no sense whatsoever. Neither bill can become "law of the land" without the Senate and the president.
The Republican Party is nothing more than a tiny car filled with clowns. Please, media and voters, stop taking them seriously. Especially Majority Leader Eric Cantor who has launched himself to the top of the wacky Republican heap just above Gohmert, King (both), Foxx and Bachmann.
Stop it. Do not take them seriously. Debunk, disprove, mock. Do not present them as serious players in this process.
Adding... Since this bill was introduced prior to April Fools Day, I'll assume it's not a ridiculous Republican joke.
