Jay Newton-Small makes several important points about why Eric Massa isn't Mark Foley.
The one that occurred to me right away was the hypocrisy gap. Eric Massa doesn't have a lengthy anti-gay voting record. Foley did. And that was the heart of the issue with Foley. The hypocrisy. That's why we made a big deal out of Foley being gay -- a gay Republican hypocrite.
But when it comes to Massa, there's nothing funny or entertaining or worthy of scorn about him possibly being gay. The heart of the Massa issue is that he apparently sexually harassed staffers. Beyond that, maybe there's something to say about his television meltdowns and his ridiculous position on healthcare.
But to focus on Massa possibly being gay really isn't smart, unless there's a Foley-ish hypocrisy problem -- and there clearly isn't.
