NBC News first reported this afternoon that federal prosecutors placed a wiretap on phone lines belonging to Trump's longtime henchman Michael Cohen.
NBC also reports that the wiretap incidentally collected at least one phone call between Cohen and White House.
It is not clear how long the wiretap has been authorized, but NBC News has learned it was in place in the weeks leading up to the raids on Cohen's offices, hotel room, and home in early April, according to one person with direct knowledge.
At least one phone call between a phone line associated with Cohen and the White House was intercepted, the person said.
For now we can only speculate but, if the wiretap was put in place before the raid on Cohen's office, it's possible the raid was prompted by something Cohen said on the phone.
If Cohen said he was going to destroy evidence, for example, that may have been enough to convince senior Justice Department officials and a judge to sign off on the raid.
One thing is for certain: Trump is going to completely lose his shit tonight or tomorrow morning. Trump will be speaking at the National Rifle Association's (NRA) annual convention tomorrow and I expect he'll attack the FBI during his speech.
Update... NBC News has updated their own report. Officials who spoke to NBC say investigators only logged Cohen's calls, they did not listen to the calls while they were in progress.
