The broiling anti-Muslim sentiment in America is beginning to ooze beyond just the 9/11 Fetishists and the usual wingnut fear-mongers. The editor-in-chief of the New Republic, Marty Peretz, wrote an astonishingly awful piece about Muslims recently and is rightfully being ripped to shreds for it. Here's a sample:
[F]rankly, Muslim life is cheap, most notably to Muslims. And among those Muslims led by the Imam Rauf [of the NYC "mosque" project] there is hardly one who has raised a fuss about the routine and random bloodshed that defines their brotherhood. So, yes, I wonder whether I need honor these people and pretend that they are worthy of the privileges of the First Amendment which I have in my gut the sense that they will abuse.
What the who now? How does a man rise to the level of editor-in-chief of the New Republic and entirely fail to grasp the difference between the vast majority of Muslims and the fringe radicals and terrorist? The bigotry is especially shocking coming from this source.
