Two little theories, really. 1) This idea has been in the works for a long time. 2) When 60 Minutes asked P-E Obama about having a Republican in his cabinet, this is who he meant.
I am sure there were other options but I'm just as sure that Gates has been internally vetted as someone who won't have any problem being part of Team Obama. In fact, I'll bet he's looking quite forward to being in a group of effective people with reality based policies. Could be make for an interesting memoir by Gates a few years down the road.
